Indian cricket’s newest teenage sensation, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, continues to make headlines after receiving his maiden call-up to the national T20I squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. With the 15-year-old set to join a senior international setup for the first time, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken an unprecedented step by allowing his parents to accompany him during overseas assignments. The move highlights the board’s commitment to ensuring a smooth transition for one of the country’s most exciting young talents as he prepares for the biggest challenge of his career.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi earns India call-up after stunning IPL 2026 campaign

Suryavanshi’s rapid rise through the ranks has been nothing short of remarkable. The teenage batter forced his way into national selection discussions through a series of outstanding performances in age-group cricket and an eye-catching IPL 2026 season.

His fearless approach at the top of the order, combined with an ability to dominate experienced bowlers, made him one of the most talked-about young cricketers in the country. The selectors were particularly impressed with his maturity under pressure and his consistency throughout the season.

Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar acknowledged that Suryavanshi’s performances left little room for debate regarding his inclusion in the squad.

Speaking after the squad announcement, Agarkar stated that the youngster had effectively “picked himself” through his displays in domestic cricket, Under-19 tournaments and the IPL. He also pointed to Suryavanshi’s impactful performances during crucial stages of the tournament, where he frequently carried his side’s batting unit.

The teenager has now been included in India’s squads for the T20I tours of Ireland and England, marking the beginning of what many believe could be a long international career.

BCCI allows parents to travel with teenage prodigy

Recognising the unique circumstances surrounding a 15-year-old joining an adult international squad, the BCCI has made a special exception to its usual touring policies. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia revealed that the board has requested Suryavanshi’s parents to accompany him during the tours of Sri Lanka, England and other overseas assignments if they are willing to do so.

According to Saikia, the decision was taken because Suryavanshi is still a minor and will be sharing dressing rooms and travelling with senior professionals significantly older than him. The board believes that having a family member nearby will help him settle comfortably into the demanding environment of international cricket.

“He was selected to go with the senior team from the India A team to Sri Lanka. As he is a small child, he is still a minor. When he is travelling with the men’s team, who are all adults, therefore, we deem it proper that his parents or anybody from the family can travel with him to Sri Lanka,” Saikia said as quoted by Hindustan Times.

The BCCI official also clarified that such permissions are rarely granted and that the provision has been made solely because of Suryavanshi’s age. The objective is to provide emotional support and help the youngster adapt gradually to life in the senior setup without feeling overwhelmed. The move has been widely appreciated as a thoughtful step towards protecting and nurturing one of Indian cricket’s brightest prospects.

“We will make a request to his parents. If they are willing to go, then they can go. In fact, his father is travelling to Sri Lanka tomorrow. That is our thinking. And after that, if his parents also wish to go to England, BCCI will support that because he is a kid. So, he would need some time to assimilate with the senior boys. So, from that perspective, we are helping. This is not something we allow all parents to do. It is not that, but because he is 15 years old, he should feel comfortable, and he should take some time to adjust to the adult world,” the BCCI secretary added.

Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record could be broken

The upcoming tour could also witness a significant piece of Indian cricket history. Suryavanshi has been named in the squads for the Ireland and England T20I series as well as the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. If he makes his international debut during the matches scheduled later this month, he will become India’s youngest-ever international cricketer. The record is currently held by Sachin Tendulkar, who debuted for India at the age of 16 years and 207 days.

Breaking a record that has stood for decades would be another extraordinary milestone in Suryavanshi’s already sensational journey. While expectations around the teenager continue to grow, India’s management appears focused on ensuring that his development remains steady and well-supported.
