The historic setting of Lord’s Cricket Ground bore witness to a thrilling encounter as England clashed with New Zealand in the 1st Test of the 2026 series, which commenced on June 04, 2026. In a match dominated heavily by the ball, England managed to secure a spectacular victory on Day 4. However, it was a moment of sheer fielding brilliance on Day 4 that completely broke New Zealand’s resistance and set the tone for the final outcome of the match.

Jacob Bethell pulls off a stunning catch to send Devon Conway packing at Lord’s

As New Zealand fought hard to chase down a daunting target of 254 runs in the fourth innings, opening batter Devon Conway stood as the lone warrior. He had ground out a gritty, resilient knock, defying the English bowling attack with extreme patience. Alongside Glenn Phillips, Conway was stitching together a crucial 50-run partnership for the 7th wicket, keeping the Kiwis’ faint hopes alive.

Then came the 33.6 over mark, a moment that completely flipped the momentum. England captain Ben Stokes, bowling with the famous Lord’s slope, delivered a ball that held its line just enough. Conway attempted to gently flick the delivery over to the leg side, but the ball caught a leading edge, flying sharply toward the gully region.

Stationed at gully, young all-rounder Jacob Bethell reacted with lightning speed. Diving low to his side, Bethell intercepted the ball centimeters off the turf, scooping an unbelievable catch. Conway stood in disbelief, waiting as the TV umpire thoroughly cross-checked the low catch. The replays confirmed the clean take, officially ending Conway’s gutsy, 173-minute stay at the crease. He departed for a well-made 41 off 91 balls, including 4 fours. With his dismissal, New Zealand slumped to 111/7, and their resistance effectively collapsed.

England cruise to an emphatic win against New Zealand

The sensational catch by Bethell opened the floodgates, allowing England to wrap up an emphatic 115-run victory. The game was an absolute rollercoaster of low scores, beginning with England being bundled out for just 140 runs in their first innings. Harry Brook was the lone shining star with a quickfire 56 off 71 balls, while New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson wreaked havoc with a brilliant five-wicket haul (5/25).

New Zealand’s response was even more fragile, as they were dismantled for a mere 113 runs in their first innings. Man of the Match Ollie Robinson delivered a masterclass in swing bowling, tearing through the Kiwi top order to finish with incredible figures of 5/39.

Holding a tiny 2-run lead, England bounced back with a stronger batting performance in their second innings, posting 226 runs. Debutant Emilio Gay anchored the innings with a mature 57, while Nathan Smith bowled his heart out for New Zealand, taking 6/70.

Chasing 254 for victory, the visitors simply had no answers for England’s relentless pace attack. Aside from Conway’s 41 and an unbeaten 44 from Glenn Phillips, the batting card crumbled. Gus Atkinson was the chief destroyer in the final innings, running through the lower order to claim 5/30. New Zealand were eventually rolled over for 138 runs in 40.3 overs, handing England a comprehensive 1-0 lead in the Test series.
