In a significant update ahead of India’s highly anticipated white-ball summer, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a major change to the national T20I squads. As the reigning ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions prepare to embark on their overseas campaigns in Ireland and England, their bowling artillery has undergone a forced reshuffle. Newly appointed T20I captain Shreyas Iyer will have to navigate these challenging conditions without one of his premier pace spearheads, shifting the dynamic of India’s newly reshaped blueprint for the shortest format.

Mohammed Siraj to miss Ireland and England tour’s T20I squad

On June 9, 2026, the BCCI issued an official media advisory confirming that right-arm fast bowler Siraj has been withdrawn from the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England. The decision follows comprehensive evaluations by the BCCI Medical Team in coordination with Team Management. Siraj has been advised to undergo a mandatory period of rest under the board’s strict workload management programme.

With a gruelling international calendar on the horizon, including a full ODI series against England and the subsequent T20 tournament at the 2026 Asian Games in September, the board chose a precautionary route to minimize injury risks and preserve the bowler’s peak fitness.

To fill the void left by Siraj, the Men’s Selection Committee has named Karnataka’s hit-the-deck paceman Prasidh Krishna as his replacement for both tours. Krishna, who has previously shown exceptional chemistry alongside Siraj in overseas conditions, steps into a dynamic, youthful squad featuring fresh talent like teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

The updated Indian T20I roster for the tour beginning with the first T20I in Belfast on June 26 includes:

Shreyas Iyer (C), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (WK), Ishan Kishan (WK), Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma (VC), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Prasidh Krishna.

Siraj’s outstanding run in IPL 2026 season

The call to rest Siraj highlights the physical toll of his heavy involvement in competitive cricket, particularly his spectacular, high-intensity performance in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Spearheading the pace attack for the Gujarat Titans (GT), Siraj enjoyed an outstanding run, proving why he is regarded as one of the most lethal assets in modern T20 cricket.

Playing all 17 matches for GT, the Hyderabad-born speedster bowled 372 balls, reliably delivering high-impact breakthroughs in the Powerplay. He collected 19 wickets at a striking average of 29.58.

Siraj’s T20 evolution was fully on display during the IPL 2026 season. He coupled his natural ability to extract lateral movement with highly disciplined middle-over and death-overs execution. His economy rate stood at 9.06, while his sharp strike rate of 19.58 underscored his continuous threat to opposition batters. His season-best performance of 3/26 against the Chennai Super Kings encapsulated his tactical growth. Having carried a immense bowling burden across 17 intense IPL fixtures, the elite pacer’s transition into a planned recovery phase ensures India protects its premier asset for the high-stakes international encounters awaiting later this year.
