Australia and Bangladesh are currently facing off in the opening ODI of the three-match series at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. The visitors won the toss and chose to bowl first, hoping to take advantage of the early conditions and restrict the hosts to a manageable total.

Bangladesh, however, recovered well after losing early wickets and posted a competitive 284/8 in their 50 overs. Opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim provided an aggressive start with 54 off 44 deliveries, while skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto anchored the innings with a composed 67 from 86 balls. The star of the innings was Mosaddek Hossain, whose brilliant 86 off just 70 deliveries powered Bangladesh to a challenging score.

Bangladesh could not have asked for a better start while defending 285. Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed struck on the very first ball of Australia’s chase to send opener Matthew Short back to the pavilion without scoring. Taskin charged in and delivered a sharp nip-backer at good pace. Short appeared rooted to the crease as he attempted to bring his bat down, but the ball jagged back through the bat-pad gap and crashed into the top of the off stump.

The Australian opener was left stunned as Bangladesh erupted in celebration. The spectacular delivery immediately put Australia on the back foot and handed Bangladesh the perfect start in their quest for victory. Taskin’s wicket also energized the home crowd, who roared in delight as the dangerous opener departed for a first-ball duck.

Bangladesh stay on top despite resistance from Alex Carey

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh’s batting unit laid a solid foundation through Shanto and Mosaddek’s counter-attacking innings, which pushed the total close to the 300-run mark. Australia fought back admirably with the ball, led by Nathan Ellis, who finished with impressive figures of 3/38. Liam Scott and Matt Renshaw also chipped in with two wickets each.

In reply, Australia’s chase never gained complete momentum after Taskin’s early breakthrough. Cooper Connolly attempted to rebuild the innings with a patient 35 off 50 balls, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Alex Carey looked set to steer Australia back into the contest with a well-compiled 47 from 62 deliveries. The wicketkeeper-batter played several elegant strokes and forged useful partnerships, but his dismissal handed Bangladesh another crucial breakthrough.

At the time of writing, Australia were struggling at 140/8 after 32.2 overs, still requiring 145 runs for victory. Nahid Rana has been the standout bowler for the hosts with four wickets, while Bangladesh remain firmly in control as they push for a memorable win in the series opener.
