Corey Chamblin has been named the UFL’s Assistant Coach of the Year, it was announced on Tuesday.
The 49-year-old served as the defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Battlehawks, leading a unit that allowed a league-best 243.2 net yards and 18.1 points per game. The team went 6-4 during the regular-season but were recently eliminated from postseason contention following a 29-20 loss to the Louisville Kings.
Chamblin got his first CFL coaching position as the defensive backs coach with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2007 and later served in the same role with the Calgary Stampeders, winning the 96th Grey Cup in 2008.
After a one-year stint as the defensive coordinator of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2011, he was hired as the head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2012.
The native of Birmingham, Ala. went 29-34 as the head coach in Riderville, winning the CFL’s Coach of the Year award and the 101st Grey Cup in 2013. He was fired at the midway point of the 2015 season amid an 0-9 start.
In 2017, Chamblin was hired as the defensive coordinator of the Toronto Argonauts and helped the team win the 105th Grey Cup. He left the Boatmen in 2018 to serve as the defensive backs coach at the University of Arkansas but returned to Toronto in 2019 as the head coach.
The Argonauts went 4-14 under Chamblin that year, leading to his firing. He has since served as an assistant coach with the Birmingham Stallions, San Antonio Brahmas, and Battlehawks.
