England have announced their squad for the second Test against New Zealand, scheduled to begin on June 17 at The Oval, with the spotlight firmly on the absence of regular captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson. The squad announcement was delayed following the nightclub controversy involving the two players, an incident that has sparked widespread discussion in English cricket. With the matter currently under investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), both Stokes and Atkinson have been left out of the squad. In another significant development, former captain Joe Root has been handed the responsibility of leading the side on an interim basis as England look to build on their 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson face the heat after nightclub controversy

The biggest talking point surrounding England’s squad announcement has been the omission of Stokes and Atkinson. According to the ECB, neither player has been made available for selection while investigations into their conduct continue. The controversy stems from events that reportedly took place after England’s 115-run victory over New Zealand in the opening Test at Lord’s. Reports suggested that Stokes and Atkinson remained at a London nightclub until the early hours of June 8, allegedly breaching the team’s midnight curfew.

The curfew had been introduced earlier this year following several alcohol-related incidents involving England players during overseas tours. The situation escalated further after reports emerged that Saracens Rugby Club player Totua Auvaa was involved in an altercation that resulted in an ECB security officer sustaining an injury.

With the investigation still ongoing, England’s management opted to take a firm stance by excluding both players from the squad for the upcoming Test.

Joe Root returns to leadership role

In the absence of Stokes, England have turned to one of their most experienced leaders, Root, to guide the team at The Oval. Root’s appointment marks his first stint as Test captain since stepping down from the role in April 2022. While current white-ball captain Harry Brook was also available and remains one of England’s leadership options, the selectors ultimately placed their trust in Root’s vast experience and proven track record.

The Yorkshire batter remains England’s most-capped Test captain, having led the national side in 64 matches. During his tenure, England registered 27 victories, suffered 26 defeats and played out 11 draws.

His calm presence and familiarity with the pressures of captaincy are expected to provide stability at a time when the team is dealing with significant off-field distractions. Root’s leadership experience could prove crucial as England seek to seal the series against New Zealand.

Jofra Archer returns to strengthen pace attack

England have made two changes to the squad for the second Test. Stokes and Atkinson have been replaced by wicketkeeper-batter Jordan Cox and fast bowler Jofra Archer. Archer’s return is particularly significant. The express pacer was rested for the first Test after a demanding Indian Premier League campaign, but he is now back in contention and could add extra firepower to England’s bowling attack.

Cox, meanwhile, provides additional batting depth and wicketkeeping cover. With England already holding a 1-0 advantage in the series, the selectors will hope the fresh additions help maintain momentum and keep the focus on cricket as they aim to wrap up the contest at The Oval.
