General Motors (GM)’s EVs will soon be able to use more public chargers with the launch of a new service called Energy Pass.

To summarize, Energy Pass is a new service built directly into General Motors’ dedicated apps (MyCadillac, MyChevrolet, MyGMC) for public charging, designed to work with charging stations across multiple different brands.

So far, Tesla, Electrify America, and IONNA will be supported at launch, while EVgo and ChargePoint will be added “soon”, according to Engadget.

GM notes that the brands listed will cover roughly 70 per cent of  U.S. DC fast charging stations, with only one payment method required to be able to use all of them — so no more flipping between payment apps and different linked cards.

While GM didn’t share stats about Canadian fast charging stations, a website about Energy Pass mentions “access to more than 250,000 charging stations” in the U.S. and Canada, while the service’s terms of use also note that Energy Pass in Canada is “provided by General Motors of Canada Company.” So, it sounds like Energy Pass will work in Canada, at least at some level.

Some of the partners (mainly IONNA and Tesla Superchargers) offer Plug and Charge, which means you don’t need to do anything other than plug it in and walk away. Interestingly, Plug and Charge is only available if your GM EV is native to NACS (the charging standard Tesla uses), which the auto manufacturer noted all of its EVs will adopt in 2027.

Car and Driver also reported that Plug and Charge is the goal for all Energy Pass members, with it most likely coming to other partners in the near future.
