Florida unveiled plans Thursday for a $1.45 billion renovation of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, believed to be the costliest stadium project ever in college football.

Known as “The Swamp” since legendary coach Steve Spurrier bestowed the nickname in 1992, the stadium will remain true to its 1930 roots while giving it modern enhancements, athletic director Scott Stricklin said.

Stricklin presented information about the project to a committee of the university’s Board of Trustees tasked with working out the financial details with the construction team. Also Thursday, additional information and renderings of how the alterations will modify The Swamp were posted to a dedicated website: www.swamprenovation.com.

“Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is approaching its 100th year and requires significant infrastructure improvements to remain the premier venue in college athletics,” the athletic department said through the renovation website. “The project will modernize critical systems, improve accessibility, enhance the fan experience, create new revenue opportunities, and address decades of deferred maintenance while preserving the traditions and atmosphere that make The Swamp unique.”

Plans include expanded concourses and restrooms, better points of entry and concession areas, connectivity and the addition of premium seating. Capacity will remain at about 88,000.

“The design will maintain the intimacy of the seating bowl, preserve the proximity of the fans to the field and continue to create the intimidating environment that has defined Florida football for generations,” Stricklin said, per The Athletic. “We are not diminishing what makes The Swamp special. We are strengthening it. Simply put … The Swamp will be bigger, better, louder.”

Construction is expected to begin after the conclusion of the 2026 football season, with the renovations expected to be fully completed in 2030 for the venue’s centennial anniversary.

The Gators expect to play at The Swamp throughout the renovation, with certain areas taken out of commission on game days when necessary.

Funds for the renovations will come from several sources, including a combination of private donations, capital reserves, revenues from the project and long-term debt. The plan “is designed to support the project while maintaining the long-term financial health of Florida Athletics,” according to the website.
