Real Madrid have announced the appointment of Jose Mourinho as their new head coach.
The Special One returns to the Spanish capital for his second stint in charge of Los Blancos, as they look to recover from another underwhelming season.
A statement released by the club said: “The Board of Directors of Real Madrid C.F., meeting today, Thursday, June 11, and presided over by Florentino Pérez, has agreed to appoint José Mourinho as the first team’s head coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029.
“José Mourinho will join Real Madrid on July 13, the day preseason begins.”
Madrid president Perez had made Mourinho’s return a key pledge during his successful re-election campaign.
Among the commitments made during the election campaign were proposed moves for defenders Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries, alongside plans for a marquee signing valued at around €150 million.
Madrid have already tested the market by submitting a bid for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, although that approach was rejected.
A familiar face at the Bernabeu
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, overseeing one of the most competitive eras in the club’s recent history.
During that spell he guided Madrid to a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Super Cup, while also reaching three successive Champions League semi-finals.
His league-winning side set several records and ended Barcelona’s domestic dominance under Pep Guardiola.
Since leaving Madrid, Mourinho has managed Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma, Fenerbahce and Benfica.
