Get ready, banana lovers, because the Minions are heading back to the big screen, and this time they’re trading their signature denim overalls for director’s berets. Universal Pictures and Illumination have officially released the trailer for Minions & Monsters, the third installment in the Minions prequel series and the seventh film overall in the Despicable Me franchise, and it promises to be the most ambitious (and chaotic) Minions adventure yet.
Set in 1920s Hollywood, Minions & Monsters follows a brand-new tribe of mischievous yellow henchmen, led by a Minion named James, as they crash a film set and accidentally stumble into the movie business. What starts as an innocent dream of becoming filmmakers quickly spirals into chaos when the gang discovers a spellbook and unintentionally summons real monsters onto the set, and eventually, the world. It’s a story about ambition, friendship, and the kind of disaster only a group of tiny yellow creatures could cause.
Directed once again by Pierre Coffin, who has voiced the Minions since their debut in 2010’s Despicable Me, the film features a stacked voice cast including Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, Phil LaMarr, Allison Janney, and Trey Parker. The screenplay comes from Brian Lynch and Coffin, the team behind some of the franchise’s most beloved entries.
Originally slated for a 2027 release, Minions & Monsters was moved up to July 1, 2026, taking over a coveted summer blockbuster slot. The film made its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 21, 2026, ahead of its wide theatrical release in the United States.
