Lionsgate, LuckyChap, and Hasbro Entertainment are placing their Monopoly money-shaped bets on the screen development of the iconic and beloved board game. The studios are partnering with Neil Widener&Gavin James(A Minecraft Movie) and Rebecca Angelo & Lauren Schuker Blum (Dumb Money) to develop a concept for this game to movie adaptation.
While the project is still in the very early stages, insiders have said that the studios have seen two pitches and will commission one of these scripts.
The involvement of LuckyChap – co-owned by Margot Robbie – (Barbie, I, Tonya) was first announced at CinemaCon in 2024, following the record-breaking success of Greta Gerwig’s 2023 hit movie, Barbie.
While Lionsgate, LuckyChap, and Hasbro Entertainment are confirmed in this development, this isn’t the first time that studios have been vying to make a Monopoly movie. Back in 2015, Lionsgate enlisted Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show) to write a screenplay, and a subsequent attempt was made with Kevin Hart, though neither of these materialised.
Long before this, Universal and Hasbro signed a six-year partnership in 2008 to produce films based on Hasbro’s game and toy brands. Though nothing came of this partnership, partly due to the box office flop of 2012’s Battleship, Hasbro retained the rights once the partnership ended. It seems a Monopoly feature isn’t the only project in the works for Hasbro Entertainment – they have also been developing an unscripted series for Netflix, joining forces with Studio Lambert, the production company behind the triumphant game show The Traitors.
Fresh off the success of A Minecraft Movie, which grossed over $960 million at the box office, are writers Widener & James. This duo have also written A Minecraft Sequel, set for cinematic release next July, and is currently adapting the video game Jak & Daxter for Sony/PlayStation, which Ruben Fleischer (Now You See Me 3) is set to direct.
Writers Angelo & Schuker Blum have collaborated on Universal’s upcoming Murder She Wrote starring Jamie Lee Curtis, as well as Apple TV’s upcoming biopic of talent agent Sue Mengers, titled Sue, with Jennifer Lawrence attached to star.
