Yet, former South African great Jonty Rhodes believes the conversation should move beyond comparisons and instead celebrate India’s extraordinary fortune in producing two iconic batters back-to-back.

Speaking on Prakhar Gupta’s YouTube channel, Rhodes shared his admiration for Kohli’s longevity and commitment while acknowledging that the Indian star could potentially surpass Tendulkar from a statistical standpoint. However, the legendary fielder questioned the need to pit the two superstars against each other.
“There is so much cricket. He’s not getting downtime. I know he’s playing only franchise cricket in India. But there’s not a lot of downtime. His body, he’s stronger and mentally and physically, he’s in such great shape that he could be better than Tendulkar from a records point of view. I could ask the question a lot. Who’s better? But why are you even trying to compare them? Isn’t it amazing that India have produced these two most amazing generational batters? Straight after each other,” Rhodes said.
Rhodes also highlighted the unique timing of their careers, noting that India did not have to wait years between the emergence of two all-time greats. Instead, Tendulkar and Kohli overlapped, inspiring millions through their performances and professionalism. According to him, their influence extends far beyond statistics, with both players shaping generations of aspiring cricketers and elevating the global profile of Indian cricket.
“The fact that it wasn’t a ten-year gap that India had this great player and ten years later somebody. Not just their contribution with the bat but their contribution to the inspiration of that generation. It should be celebrated rather than compared. One country has these two players that between them have inspired billions. It’s incredible that these two have overlapped,” added Rhodes.

As Tendulkar’s legacy remains firmly established and Kohli continues to inspire modern audiences, attention is gradually shifting toward the next wave of Indian talent.
