Amanda Seyfried is opening up about the heavy backlash she received following her statements about the late Charlie Kirk.
The actress noted that she has had to hire extra security for her safety and that of her family, despite her repeated clarification of her statements.
Kirk, the popular American political activist and entrepreneur, was assassinated in September 2025 by a rooftop sniper while speaking at a TPUSA event.
Following Kirk’s brutal murder, Seyfried responded to an Instagram post highlighting some of the late political activist’s most controversial statements. Her comment read, “He was hateful,” and it instantly resulted in a torrential rain of backlash from Kirk’s supporters.
Speaking during a recent interview with GQ Magazine, the actress recalled the situation, noting that it was “crazy.” She revealed that the turn of events surprised her because she believes in voicing her opinion without sounding unkind.
“A, I’m allowed to f-cking voice my feelings, and B, do it in a way that’s not unkind necessarily,” she said. Notably, the situation spiraled out of control so much that she started worrying about the safety of her family.
Despite it all, Seyfried still stated that in the heat of the backlash, she still wanted her children to know that they can voice their opinion freely as long as they are “not harmful.”
“And then all of a sudden I find myself with a f-cking bodyguard at the airport, and I’m like, ‘this is crazy,” she added.
Amanda Seyfried Previously Cleared The Air On Her Statements

Following the backlash that stemmed from her initial comments about Kirk, Seyfried attempted to clear the air, insisting that while she said Kirk was hateful, she didn’t think his murder was justified.
She shared a post on Instagram urging her followers to “remember the nuance of humanity.” The Golden Globe award winner maintained that she can get angry about racism and misogyny and still “very much agree that Charlie Kirk’s murder was absolutely disturbing and deplorable,” per The Blast.
Seyfried concluded by reiterating that no one, including Kirk, deserved to experience such a gruesome death. She further added that at least everyone could agree that there were too many violent deaths and unnecessary shootings in the country.
Amanda Seyfried Insisted That Her Words Were Based On Reality

Months after clearing the air on her statements, Seyfried still found herself under scrutiny during an interview in December.
She insisted that she didn’t just call Kirk “hateful” out of the blue, but chose her words based on “actual reality.”
According to Seyfried, what she said was based on real quotes and footage from Kirk’s many interviews where he aired his famously controversial opinions, per The Blast.
The Actress Opened Up About The Positive Aspects Of Her OCD Diagnosis

In addition to speaking about her controversial remarks, Seyfried also gave the public a peek into her life as someone living with OCD.
Seyfried’s formal OCD diagnosis came when she was 19. While it may have seemed like a debilitating condition at the time, it actually helped the actress make better choices when she was younger.
As reported by The Blast, Seyfried revealed that due to her condition, she purposely avoided drugs, staying out too late, or drinking too much. Instead, she would find herself making social plans and canceling them at the last minute, choosing instead to stay within her comfort zone.
Amanda Seyfried Gave An Inside Look Into The Making Of Her Recent Film

Even as young Seyfried avoided drugs to stay in her comfort zone, she eventually made a name for herself in the film industry, going on to appear in many critically acclaimed projects.
In one of her most recent films, “The Testament of Ann Lee,” the actress was further pushed out of her comfort zone.
She revealed that the movie “needed to be graphic,” requiring her to be exposed in some scenes. Although some might have presumed she was completely naked, Seyfried noted that she wore a “prosthetic butthole” as an extra precaution, according to The Blast.
Seyfried also opened up about the mental challenge of taking on such a role, saying that it was daunting.
However, she explained her reason for agreeing to challenge herself, noting that her artistic growth is largely driven by fear. As such, doing something that scares her helps her improve her acting skills and become a more creative person overall.
