With the 2027 ODI World Cup scheduled to be held in South Africa, anticipation is already building among cricket fans across the globe. The tournament is expected to feature fierce competition, with powerhouses such as India, Australia, England, New Zealand, and Proteas likely to enter as strong contenders for the coveted trophy.

For India, discussions around the ideal playing XI have intensified as selectors and former cricketers weigh in on the best combination for challenging conditions in South Africa. While the squad is expected to feature a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging stars, every position remains a subject of debate, especially with several talented players competing for limited spots.

Mohit Sharma outlines his preferred India XI for the global event

Adding his voice to the conversation, India pacer Mohit Sharma recently shared his preferred playing XI for the 2027 ODI World Cup. His selections reflect a balanced side built around proven performers, explosive batters, dependable all-rounders, and a potent pace attack.

    Star openers

At the top of the order, Mohit admitted he faced a difficult choice between veteran Rohit Sharma and rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal for the opening slot alongside Shubman Gill. While Gill’s place appears certain as he is the leader of the side, Mohit suggested either Rohit’s vast experience or Jaiswal’s fearless approach could complement him effectively depending on form and team strategy.

    Solid middle-order

The middle order features an established core of Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, and KL Rahul. Kohli’s consistency and ability to anchor innings, combined with Iyer’s stroke play and the versatility offered by Kishan and Rahul, provide India with considerable batting depth. The lineup is designed to adapt to different match situations while maintaining an attacking mindset.

    Dynamic all-rounders

Mohit also placed his faith in dynamic all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja, both of whom bring invaluable balance to the side through their contributions with both bat and ball. Their presence would allow India greater flexibility in team composition and tactical planning during the tournament.

    Sharp bowling attack

The bowling attack in Mohit’s XI is pace-heavy, featuring Harshit Rana, Jasprit Bumrah, and Arshdeep Singh. Bumrah’s experience and ability to deliver under pressure make him the leader of the attack, while Arshdeep’s left-arm angle and Harshit’s emerging pace provide variety and wicket-taking options.

    No place for Kuldeep Yadav

Perhaps the biggest surprise in Mohit’s selection is the absence of wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Widely regarded as one of India’s premier white-ball bowlers, Kuldeep has consistently troubled batters in the 50-over format and is often viewed as an automatic pick for major ICC tournaments.

Instead, Mohit opted for Jadeja as the lone frontline spin option in his preferred XI. While Jadeja offers exceptional control, fielding, and lower-order batting strength, many fans believe Kuldeep’s ability to pick wickets in the middle overs could prove invaluable on the global stage.
