Matheus Cunha scored twice and Vinicius Junior struck his second goal of the World Cup 2026 as Brazil beat Haiti but lost Raphinha to an apparent hamstring injury on matchday two in Philadelphia.

Barcelona livewire Raphinha, who suffered three separate hamstring injuries last season, made way after the restored Cunha had bundled in the 23rd-minute opener on his full World Cup debut and fired in from Vinicius Junior’s pass 13 minutes later.

Having equalised in Brazil’s 1-1 draw against Morocco in their opener, Vinicius Junior netted again from Lucas Paqueta’s pass during first-half added time.

Brazil will hope to win Group C when they face Scotland on Wednesday. Eliminated Haiti, who lost 1-0 to Scotland on matchday one, will simultaneously meet Morocco.

World Cup 2026 analysis: Raphinha misery in Brazil vs Haiti

Raphinha missed 23 matches for club and country with the issue in 2025/26, including five internationals between October and January.

Bournemouth forward Rayan came on for the 29-year-old in the 40th minute. “It didn’t look good, did it?” former England international Lee Dixon asked on ITV. “He looked very upset about his injury, whatever it is.”

USA Women head coach Emma Hayes called Raphinha’s plight “a massive loss” for the record five-time World Cup winners.

“It is a significant loss for them, without question,” added Hayes. “I do think Danilo playing gave Raphinha a little bit more license to come inside or stay outside, depending on things.”

World Cup 2026: Haiti out after losing to Brazil

Haiti have now lost all five of their matches at the World Cup, having previously featured in 1974.

Boss Sebastien Migne brought on Wilson Isidor and Dominique Simon for Frantzdy Pierrot and Carlens Arcus – both of whom had been booked – at half-time, as well as switching from a back five to a four.

Qualification was a huge achievement for a team who have been unable to play home games in Haiti amid a humanitarian crisis in their homeland, and this was a respectable way to bow out against one of the favourites for the title.

World Cup 2026: Brazil team vs Haiti

Brazil made changes in defence and attack, bringing in Danilo for Roger Ibanez and Cunha for Igor Thiago.

All-time Brazil top scorer Neymar received a surprise call-up after barely featuring at club level over the last three years because of injuries, but the Santos striker has missed both of their matches because of an injured left calf.

Defender Eder Militao (thigh), winger Willian Estevao (hamstring) and forward Rodrygo (knee) missed out on the finals through injury, as did Wesley, who was called up but had to be replaced by Manchester United-bound Atalanta midfielder Ederson.

    • Across their World Cup history, Brazil have won nine of their 10 matches against CONCACAF nations (D1), conceding twice in total along the way
    • Brazil avoided failing to win their first two matches at a single World Cup tournament for the first time since 1978 in Argentina (D2)
    • Having lost 1-0 to Cameroon in 2022 and drawn with Morocco this year, Brazil had been at risk of going three group games without a win for the first time since a run of two draws and one defeat across the 1974 and 1978 tournaments
    • Vinicius Junior has been involved in six goals in six appearances at the World Cup (3 goals, 3 assists)

    • Among sides to play 10 games in CONCACAF qualifying, only Bermuda (31) and Nicaragua (16) conceded more goals than Haiti (13), as well as shipping the third-largest amount of expected goals (11.7)
    • No player scored more goals in the campaign than Haiti’s Duckens Nazon (6), including a hat-trick after coming on as a sub against Costa Rica in September
    • Migne is the second person to coach Haiti at a World Cup after Antoine Tassy and the first non-Haitian to do so
