The Athletics will be selecting the contract of first baseman/outfielder Joey Meneses from Triple-A Las Vegas, MLB.com’s Martin Gallegos reports. Corresponding moves will need to be made to add Meneses to both the 26-man and 40-man rosters.
Meneses signed a minor league deal with the A’s back in November, and he has since played for Mexico at the World Baseball Classic and posted some big numbers against Triple-A pitching. Meneses is hitting .348/.401/.543 with 11 homers over 317 plate appearances for Las Vegas, though some big caveats apply. This production came in the very hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, which is why Meneses’ impressive slash line translates to only a relatively modest 123 wRC+. Beyond the PCL environs, Meneses is also benefiting from a .364 BABIP
Still, it makes sense why the A’s would see if Meneses can continue even some of his hot hitting against big league pitching. Nick Kurtz obviously isn’t going anywhere at first base, but the right-handed hitting Meneses could spell Lawrence Butler or Carlos Cortes (both lefty swingers) in right field or at DH when a southpaw is on the mound.
The 34-year-old Meneses has hit .274/.322/.408 over 1210 career PA in the majors, all with the Nationals from 2022-24. He burst onto the scene with a .930 OPS over 240 PA in his 2022 rookie season but his production came back to earth over the next two seasons, and Washington cut ties with Meneses in November 2024. He spent the 2025 campaign playing for the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Syrcause, but didn’t receive any further looks in the majors.
