The Braves’ deal for Mauricio Dubón has turned into one of the better trades of last offseason. Acquired from Houston in a one-for-one swap for defensive specialist Nick Allen, Dubón has played a valuable utility role for the NL East leaders.
Dubón takes a league average .262/.316/.408 batting line into tonight’s series opener in San Diego. He has already matched last year’s season total with seven home runs, putting him on pace to surpass his career high of 10 longballs. He spent April as the primary shortstop, then moved to the outfield for the majority of May. Dubón has divided his playing time this month between shortstop, left field and center field.
It’s a strong start to the 31-year-old’s platform season, as he’s slated to reach free agency for the first time in his career. Despite being so close to the market, Dubón tells Gabriel Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he’s open to in-season extension discussions.
“If they come and offer something, and it makes sense for me and my family, we’re open to hear it,” the utilityman told Burns. “It is what it is at some point. I feel like I’ve put myself in a good position, but whatever happens, happens. I’d love to stay here, man. But, like I say, it’s a business.”
Dubón is playing on a $6.1MM salary for his final year of arbitration. The Astros seemed set to non-tender him had they not found a trade just before the deadline. That the Braves were able to acquire him for Allen alone suggests Houston didn’t find robust interest in earlier conversations with other teams.
While Dubón has probably elevated his free agent stock to an extent, it’s unlikely that teams are going to view him dramatically differently than they did a few months ago. He entered the season as a career .257/.295/.374 hitter in more than 2000 MLB plate appearances. There haven’t been any dramatic changes to his plate discipline or batted ball metrics. Dubón can contribute offensively, but most of his value still lies in his plus glove at multiple positions and his strong reputation as a teammate.
Dubón is trending towards hitting the market off a better season than Isiah Kiner-Falefa had when he signed a $6MM contract with Boston last winter. He’s a superior defender to Willi Castro, who commanded a two-year deal worth $12.8MM from Colorado. This isn’t a profile that usually gets to three years, but Dubón has a solid case for a two-year contract at $7-10MM annually.
The Braves rarely tip their hand about contract or trade discussions, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if they were open to an extension. They’ve been aggressive on that front under president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos. Dubón has seemingly fit well in the clubhouse and would help cover for a shortstop position that again looks like a question mark.
Ha-Seong Kim, who re-signed on a $20MM free agent deal, has had a brutal year. He missed the first six weeks after suffering a torn tendon in his right hand during an offseason fall. Since returning in mid-May, he’s hitting .081 with zero extra-base hits. Even if Kim turns things around, he’ll return to free agency next offseason. That’s also true of Jorge Mateo, who has outplayed Kim and gotten most of the playing time of late. The Braves don’t have much upper level infield depth. They have a couple intriguing lower minors prospects (e.g. Alex Lodise, John Gil, Tate Southisene) but none who’ll be a factor in 2027.
There’d be a similar logic in extending Dubón as there was in trading for him in the first place. He’d raise the floor at shortstop while having the versatility to project as their top option off the bench if they’re able to land a clearer everyday player. Dubón won a couple Gold Gloves in a utility capacity over his three-plus seasons in Houston.
