England have unveiled a 17-player squad for their upcoming five-match T20I series against reigning T20 World Cup champions India. The series will begin on July 1 at Chester-le-Street and marks England’s first major white-ball assignment since their campaign at the 2026 T20 World Cup.

With India set to arrive for a high-profile tour, the England selectors have opted for a balanced squad featuring several established stars alongside a few fresh faces. As England continue building towards future ICC events, the series provides an opportunity for both senior players and emerging talents to stake their claim in the national side.

James Coles earns first England call-up

The biggest talking point from the squad announcement is the inclusion of all-rounder James Coles, who has received his maiden call-up to the England T20I squad. Coles has impressed consistently over the past year through his performances for the England Lions and in domestic T20 competitions. The left-handed all-rounder has established himself as one of the country’s most promising young talents, scoring 1,373 runs and picking up 53 wickets in 71 T20 matches.

He further strengthened his credentials earlier this month with a remarkable unbeaten double century for Sussex in the County Championship. England Men’s national selector Marcus North praised Coles’ progress and described him as a deserving addition to the squad following his strong performances across formats.

England make key changes from World Cup squad

England have made a few notable alterations to the squad that featured at the 2026 T20 World Cup. Jordan Cox, Sonny Baker and Saqib Mahmood return to the setup and are among the key changes for the India series. The trio adds greater depth across multiple departments. Cox provides additional batting and wicketkeeping options, while Baker and Mahmood strengthen the pace-bowling resources alongside Jofra Archer, Luke Wood and Josh Tongue.

Meanwhile, England will be without Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton, both of whom remain unavailable due to injury. Their absence has opened opportunities for other players to cement their places in the squad ahead of future international assignments.

    Experienced core remains intact

Despite introducing fresh talent, England have retained a strong core of experienced performers. Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid and Will Jacks continue to form the backbone of the squad.

The spin department looks well covered with Rashid, Liam Dawson and Rehan Ahmed providing multiple options, while Jacob Bethell and Jacks add further all-round flexibility. Archer’s presence is another major boost for the hosts as they prepare to take on one of the strongest T20 sides in world cricket. The five-match series will be played across Chester-le-Street, Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol and Southampton between July 1 and July 11, with both teams expected to use the contest as a key preparation platform for future ICC tournaments.
