Indian cricket legend and former national captain Rohit Sharma added another illustrious feather to his decorated cap as he was conferred the prestigious Padma Shri by President Droupadi Murmu. The grand Civil Investiture Ceremony, held at the majestic Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, marked a defining milestone for one of modern cricket’s most influential icons. Known globally as the ‘Hitman,’ Rohit’s inclusion in the elite list of civilian awardees highlights his monumental contribution to Indian sports, drawing widespread celebration from the fraternity and millions of fans.

Rohit Sharma reacts with an emotional social media post to his Padma Shri recognition

For Rohit, the timing of the ceremony carried an uncanny poetic beauty. The legendary opener took to Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) to express his profound gratitude, highlighting a heartwarming historical coincidence that felt almost predestined.

“23rd June bringing all kinds of magic. Nineteen years ago, it began with an India cap. Today, another proud chapter is added to the story,” an emotional Rohit shared alongside a picture of him holding the prestigious honour.

Precisely nineteen years prior, on June 23, 2007, a young 20-year-old Rohit stepped onto the international circuit during an ODI against Ireland in Belfast. Though the future batting maestro did not get a chance to bat or bowl in that rain-curtailed match, his journey began on that very calendar date. From a middle-order prospect struggling for consistency in his early years to an era-defining opener, Rohit’s transformation remains an inspiring masterclass in perseverance.

Since being promoted to open the innings regularly in 2013, Rohit has rewritten the white-ball record books. He remains the only cricketer in history to hit three individual double-centuries in One Day Internationals, including his breath-taking world-record score of 264 against Sri Lanka. Over his stellar international career, he amassed 11,720 runs in 285 ODIs and retired from the shortest format as India’s highest run-scorer with 4,231 runs across 159 T20Is.

More than his batting, his legacy is cemented by his tactical brilliance as a leader. After guiding the Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles, Rohit took over the national captaincy in 2022. He brought an end to India’s 13-year drought for ICC silverware by masterminding a historic, unbeaten run to the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title in Barbados, followed swiftly by lifting the Champions Trophy in 2025.

Rohit sets his sights on the 2027 ODI World Cup title

Despite retiring from T20Is and Test cricket to manage his workload, the 39-year-old batting icon is far from finished. Just last week, Rohit proved age is just a number when he became the oldest Indian to ever feature in an ODI, smashing a blistering 79 off 69 deliveries against Afghanistan in Chennai.

With the ultimate civilian honour now fueling his motivation, insider reports and cricket pundits suggest that the Hitman has firmly trained his eyes on the 2027 ODI World Cup. Having suffered an agonizing heartbreak in the final of the 2023 home World Cup, lifting the 50-over mega-prize remains the ultimate unfinished business for the Mumbai maestro. Backed by his current explosive form, the newly minted Padma Shri awardee is determined to lead India’s charge and complete his fairy-tale career with the one trophy that slipped away.
