A masterclass from veteran opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge lit up The Oval as England stormed to a commanding nine-wicket victory over New Zealand in the 28th match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. The high-stakes Group 2 day-night encounter on June 27 saw England comfortably chase down a target of 164 with 16 balls to spare, firmly asserting their dominance in the tournament.

Wyatt-Hodge’s unbeaten, scintillating 89 runs off just 53 balls completely systematically dismantled the White Ferns’ bowling attack, ensuring England’s march continued with absolute authority in front of a passionate home crowd in London.

England bowling attack halts New Zealand to a formidable score

Opting to bat first, New Zealand built a solid platform despite facing a disciplined England bowling unit. Openers Melie Kerr and Isabella Gaze anchored the early phase, putting together a 70-run opening partnership inside 10 overs. Skipper Melie led from the front with a steady 42 off 34 balls, while Gaze contributed a 27-ball 28. However, England’s bowling attack, marshalled intelligently by stand-in captain Charlie Dean, triggered a sudden collapse.

Dani Gibson broke the opening stand and quickly removed Izzy Sharp for a duck, finishing with efficient figures of 2 for 30. Freya Kemp accounted for Gaze, leaving New Zealand suddenly stuttering at 70 for 3.

A resilient counter-attack by Sophie Devine, who blasted a rapid 30 off 14 deliveries, alongside Brooke Halliday’s 20, briefly threatened to take the game away from the hosts. Sharp fielding by England, resulting in the crucial run-outs of Halliday and Suzie Bates, alongside highly economical four-over spells from Lauren Bell (1 for 24) and Sophie Ecclestone (0 for 24), kept the scoring under control. Maddy Green remained unbeaten on 17 to push New Zealand’s total to a competitive 163 for 6 at the end of their 20 overs.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge stars as England cruise past New Zealand

Chasing 164, England’s response was emphatic, fearless, and structured. Although Nensi Patel provided an early breakthrough for the White Ferns by dismissing Amy Jones for 17 in the fourth over, it proved to be the only celebration for the New Zealand side. Joining forces at 36 for 1, Wyatt-Hodge and Sophia Dunkley executed a flawless, unbroken 128-run partnership that took the game completely away from the opposition.

Wyatt-Hodge was in spectacular touch, hitting 15 boundaries across her unbeaten 89. She reached her half-century off just 33 balls, using a mix of aggressive sweeps and elegant drives to pierce the infield. Dunkley played the perfect supporting role, anchoring the chase with a composed 49 not out off 38 balls, including five boundaries.

The New Zealand bowlers had no answers for the duo’s clinical precision. Mainstays like Lea Tahuhu and Jess Kerr went wicketless, conceding over nine runs an over as the batters expertly manipulated the gaps. Even a brief rain interruption at 65 for 1 could not derail England’s momentum. The hosts cruised across the finish line in just 17.2 overs, finishing at 164 for 1 to seal a comprehensive 9-wicket win.
