An atmosphere charged with raw emotion enveloped Trent Bridge on Sunday, June 28, 2026, as the third Test between England and New Zealand witnessed one of the most stunning announcements in modern cricket history. Amidst the high-stakes battle of the decisive third Test, which commenced on June 25, 2026, in Nottingham, England captain Ben Stokes shocked the global cricket community by revealing this match would be his final international appearance. The dramatic declaration instantly shifted the narrative of the series, turning day four into an unforgettable farewell for an English cricket icon.

England stars pay tribute to retiring Ben Stokes with guard of honour at Trent Bridge

Barely an hour after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the legendary all-rounder’s sudden retirement, deeply moving scenes unfolded on the field. Shortly after the tea break on Day 4, the atmosphere turned electric yet solemn. As Stokes walked out to the middle for his final international innings, teammates and opponents alike united in respect.

The England players lined up alongside the two New Zealand batters to form an emotional guard of honour. The entire Trent Bridge crowd stood in unison, delivering a deafening, prolonged ovation for a man who has defined the grit of English cricket for over a decade.

The shocking announcement capped off a turbulent few weeks for the England skipper. Stokes had missed the second Test following an off-field incident outside a Chelsea nightclub involving fast bowler Gus Atkinson after the series opener. While a thorough investigation by the ECB and the Cricket Regulator cleared both players of severe wrongdoing, they received formal written warnings. After missing a match to play for their respective counties, both were recalled for this crucial series decider.

Stokes made his presence felt immediately, taking 4 wickets for 70 runs in New Zealand’s first innings and chipping in with 2 more in the second, briefly shifting the momentum back to the hosts.

New Zealand close in on series victory heading into Day 5

Despite the emotional send-off, New Zealand firmly seized control of the match by the close of Day 4, positioning themselves perfectly for a memorable away series victory. The Black Caps set up their dominance with a massive first-innings total of 438, powered by Rachin Ravindra’s brilliant 72 and Daryl Mitchell‘s resilient 113. England responded with 354, largely thanks to young Jacob Bethell’s elegant 74 and Harry Brook‘s quick-fire 58, while Nathan Smith tore through the lineup with figures of 4/91.

In their second innings, New Zealand rode on an exceptional, unbeaten century from Mitchell (100* off 241 balls) and a steady 94 from Ravindra. Despite Jofra Archer’s fierce spell of 4/53, the visitors declared at 288/9, setting England a daunting target of 373 runs to win.

England’s chase started with a blistering but chaotic counter-attack. Walking out to open the innings in a surprise tactical move, Stokes smashed a rapid 30 off just 20 balls, including two fours and two maximums, before falling to Zak Foulkes. Foulkes wreaked havoc on the top order, picking up 3/42 in a sensational spell.

By stumps on Day 4, England found themselves reeling at 103/4 after just 15overs, losing Bethell (0), Brook (2), and Ben Duckett (36) in quick succession. With Joe Root (9) and Emilio Gay (6) holding the fort, England still require 270 runs on the final day, while New Zealand need just six wickets to wrap up the Test match and secure the series.
