Neon will release James Gray’s Cannes Competition title Paper Tiger in limited US theatres on November 13 before expanding the film nationwide on November 20.
The release date follows Neon’s announcement that it will open Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or-winning drama Fjord on October 9. The film stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, with Neon giving it the same release window that launched previous Palme d’Or winners and Best Picture Oscar recipients Parasite and Anora. Fjord centres on a Romanian immigrant family living in Norway who come under investigation and faces increasing scrutiny from the country’s judicial system.

Paper Tiger draws loose inspiration from an incident in Gray’s own life, when his family encountered the Russian mafia in 1980s New York City.
Miles Teller stars as a diligent engineer and family patriarch whose life unravels after his former police officer brother, played by Adam Driver, convinces him to join a business venture. The scheme draws the brothers into a dangerous conflict with the Russian mob. Scarlett Johansson co-stars as Teller’s wife, who faces personal struggles as the family’s situation spirals out of control.
The film received a 10-minute standing ovation following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. You can read our review of PAPER TIGER here.
Following its warm reception at Cannes, Paper Tiger will enter a competitive release weekend. Lionsgate will release Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, while A24 will debut I Play Rocky, which Amazon MGM Studios is distributing.
