Hires
The American Medical Association appointed Atlanta internist Sandra Fryhofer as its new president-elect. Fryhofer, who currently serves as a professor of medicine at Emory University, will be inaugurated at the AMA in June 2027.
Clever Care Health Plan welcomed Magda Lenartowicz as its chief medical and innovation officer. A physician by training, Lenartowicz recently served as chief medical officer at healthcare provider network Altais.
CMS hired Melissa Fannin as its chief of workforce strategy. She has held executive roles at healthcare organizations in the past, having served as chief growth officer at Elevance Health and vice president of business development at Optum.
Cocrystal Pharma named James Sapirstein as its new CEO. This is not his first time serving as CEO of a pharma company, having held this role at Contravir Pharmaceuticals (now Hepion Pharmaceuticals) and Tobira Therapeutics, which was acquired by Allergan.
Prana Surgical appointed Natasha Bond as chief operating officer. In the past, she served as chief compliance officer at medical device company Sana Health.
ReferWell welcomed Eric Rosow as its new CEO. Earlier in his career, Rosow co-founded and served as CEO of health data startup Diameter Health, which was acquired by Availity. He also co-founded value-based specialty care marketplace Conduce Health, which was bought by Switchboard Health.
R1 RCM hired Eric Tagliere as its new chief information officer. He recently worked as chief technology officer at Humana.
Value-based kidney care company Strive Health announced two new additions to its C-suite: Jamie Sharp as chief medical officer and Chris Rigg as CFO. Sharp has held the position of chief medical officer before, having served in this role at Rippl, Aetna and Evolent Health. Rigg comes to Strive from Elevance Health, where he served as division CFO.
WellSpan Health welcomed Wasif Jamal as its new CIO. He joins the health system from Providence, where he most recently served as chief technology officer. Before that, he spent more than a decade in leadership roles at Microsoft.
Exits
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia CEO Madeline Bell will retire on October 1 after nearly 40 years with the health system, including 11 years at the helm.
Michael Cuffe, chief clinical officer of HCA Healthcare, is stepping down from his role in August. He joined HCA in 2011 as CEO of physician services.
Multicare CEO Bill Robertson will retire at the end of the year after leading the Washington health system for more than a decade.
Rush University System for Health CEO Omar Lateef is retiring in June 2027. He has worked at the health system for nearly 25 years.
Layoffs
ADC Therapeutics is laying off 17% of its workforce. The job cuts follow a safety scare in the biotech company’s Phase 3 LOTIS-5 trial for its blood cancer drug Zynlonta, which reported more than two dozen participant deaths.
Equip, a digital health startup for people with eating disorders, is letting go of roughly 4% of its workforce.
Missouri Health system MU Health Care is laying off 74 employees — primarily in nonclinical and administrative roles — as part of a broader restructuring aimed at strengthening the organization’s long-term financial sustainability. The health system also eliminated 76 already-vacant positions.
UPMC is reducing its workforce by about 200 people, as well as cutting 300 open positions. All of the layoffs are occurring in nonclinical or non-member-facing roles.
University of Vermont Health is eliminating 142 positions, permanently cutting 76 roles and restructuring 66 others. Most of these cuts fall in administrative areas.
