India’s disappointing T20I series defeat to Ireland has sparked intense debate among fans and experts, with the newly formed leadership duo of head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer coming under heavy scrutiny. The 2-0 loss marked India’s first-ever bilateral T20I series defeat to Ireland, leading to widespread criticism of the team’s performance.

While several former cricketers have weighed in on the result, batting great Sunil Gavaskar has urged everyone to avoid rushing to conclusions. The legendary opener believes that any new captain-coach partnership requires time to settle before expectations of consistent success can realistically be placed upon them.

Sunil Gavaskar urges patience with India’s new leadership group

Speaking during an interaction organised by Sony Sports, Gavaskar stressed that building a successful team environment is a gradual process and that both the players and support staff need time to understand each other’s expectations. According to the former India captain, the Gambhir-Iyer partnership is still in its infancy, making it unfair to judge them solely on the basis of the Ireland series.

“With any new relationship, there will always be just a little time taken for both to understand the support staff and the playing staff to understand what is expected of them. It will probably take a little (more) time, and so we just have to be a little patient with that,” Gavaskar said.

His comments come at a time when India’s leadership transition has become a major talking point following the unexpected defeat.

Gavaskar believes international cricket is a different challenge

Gavaskar also spoke about Iyer’s credentials as a captain, pointing out that the Mumbai batter has already proved his leadership abilities in franchise cricket, particularly in the IPL, by guiding teams to a title, multiple finals and playoff appearances over the years. However, he added that succeeding at the international level is an entirely different challenge, where players and captains often require time to adjust to the higher standards and increased pressure.

“Shreyas Iyer’s leadership has been proven over the years in the T20 format. We have seen him win trophies, and get teams into the knockouts and finals. But again, when it comes to international cricket, it is a whole different ball game. We see that where the individuals are brilliant at say, the Ranji Trophy level or the First-Class level, but somehow find that step up to the international level just a little bit tough to contend with. We just have to wait and see as far as Shreyas Iyer is concerned, this was just the first two games. Yes, it is a loss which is hard to take. But let’s be a little patient and see how it goes in the next five games in England,” Gavaskar concluded.

India will next face England in a five-match T20I series, where Gambhir and Iyer will look to register their first victory together and begin rebuilding momentum after the disappointing tour of Ireland.
