The cricketing landscape shifted on June 25, 2026, as England and New Zealand locked horns in the definitive 3rd Test at Nottingham. While the action on the pitch was intense, the match will forever be remembered for a seismic off-field announcement. In a move that stunned fans globally, England’s talismanic Test captain Ben Stokes announced his sudden retirement from international cricket mid-match.

The legendary all-rounder watched the final hours of his international career unfold from the Trent Bridge dressing room balcony on Monday, as a clinical New Zealand side wrapped up a 160-run victory to claim the series 2-1. Despite a tumultuous final week filled with off-field scrutiny, Stokes expressed absolute serenity regarding his departure, telling the BBC, “I am incredibly content with everything right now… I’m done, mate, and I’m very happy.”

As tributes poured in from around the world, Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar took to X (formerly Twitter) to pen a deeply moving message for the retiring icon. Tendulkar highlighted the unique flair, fearlessness, and grit that Stokes injected into the modern game—especially during his aggressive tenure leading England’s revolutionary “Bazball” era.

“I’ve always admired the way you brought energy into the game. Your positivity, your fearless intent, and the way you shaped moments under pressure stood out every time you walked in,” Tendulkar wrote. “As an all-rounder, you’ve been one of England’s finest, and as a captain, your bold tactics and instinctive reading of the game added a new edge to your side.”

Recognizing the competitor within Stokes, the Master Blaster added a poignant note about the transition ahead: “Wishing you the very best for what comes next. Though knowing you, staying away from the middle might be the hardest part. Good luck for your next innings!”

New Zealand outclass England to secure a dominant series victory

On the field, the Black Caps structurally dismantled the hosts to secure a famous series triumph. New Zealand laid a massive foundation in their first innings, posting a daunting 438 runs. The charge was led by captain Tom Latham, who played a spectacular, marathon knock of 151 off 214 balls, well-supported by Devon Conway’s fluent 157. Stokes fought hard with the ball in his first-innings farewell, picking up 4 for 70, while Jofra Archer claimed 2 for 75.

In reply, England’s first innings folded for 354. Ben Duckett provided a blazing 113 off just 99 balls, and young Jacob Bethell contributed a solid 74, but Kiwi debutant Nathan Smith tore through the lineup with brilliant figures of 4 for 29, leaving England trailing.

New Zealand consolidated their advantage in the second innings, declaring at 288 for 9. Rachin Ravindra’s elegant 94 and an unbeaten, aggressive 100* from Daryl Mitchell set England a monumental target of 373 runs. Archer bowled his heart out to finish with 4 for 53, but the English batters crumbled under the immense scoreboard pressure in the final innings.

Chasing a miracle, England’s second essay collapsed for a meager 212 runs in 51.2 overs. Stokes contributed a quickfire 30 upfront, and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith fought valiantly with a gritty 60, but the relentless Kiwi bowling unit proved overwhelming. Zak Foulkes dismantled the top order with 3 for 25, while spinner Mitchell Santner cleaned up the tail with 2 for 15, sealing a historic 160-run victory for New Zealand and drawing the curtains on the illustrious international career of Stokes.
