New Zealand have suffered a significant setback ahead of their upcoming ODI series against the West Indies after losing one of their frontline fast bowlers to injury. As the Black Caps prepare for a challenging five-match assignment in the Caribbean beginning on July 11, the visitors will now have to reshape their pace attack following the untimely absence of Ben Sears. The series marks New Zealand’s first ODI assignment after their Test tour of England, with Mitchell Santner returning to lead a squad featuring several experienced white-ball campaigners.

Ben Sears ruled out of New Zealand’s ODI series against the West Indies

New Zealand Cricket has confirmed that right-arm fast bowler Sears has been ruled out of the ODI series against the West Indies after aggravating an ankle injury. Sears had been managing the issue since New Zealand’s four-day Test against Ireland before it worsened during the third Test against England at Trent Bridge.

As a result, the 28-year-old has been withdrawn from the ODI squad, with left-arm seamer Ben Lister called up as his replacement. Lister, who represents the Auckland Aces in domestic cricket, has featured in four ODIs and 13 T20Is for New Zealand. His most recent ODI appearance came earlier this year against Bangladesh, where he picked up two wickets in the third ODI at Chattogram.

Sears’ absence further depletes New Zealand’s pace resources, with Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson and Will O’Rourke already being rested following the recently concluded Test series against England. However, the squad receives a timely boost with Jacob Duffy returning after paternity leave, while Nathan Smith joins the pace attack after an impressive Player of the Series performance against England.

New Zealand’s updated ODI squad for the West Indies series: Mitchell Santner (c), Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Kristian Clarke, Jacob Duffy, Matthew Fisher, Dean Foxcroft, Mitchell Hay (wk), Nick Kelly, Tom Latham (wk), Jayden Lennox, Ben Lister, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Nathan Smith, Will Young.

Ben Sears’ growing importance in New Zealand’s pace attack

Sears has steadily established himself as an important member of New Zealand’s fast-bowling unit across formats. Blessed with genuine pace and the ability to extract bounce from any surface, the Wellington quick has become one of the Black Caps’ most exciting bowling prospects in recent years.

Although his international opportunities have been interrupted by injuries, Sears has consistently impressed whenever called upon. His aggressive approach and ability to trouble batters with raw pace have made him a valuable option in New Zealand’s evolving bowling attack.

With several senior fast bowlers unavailable for the Caribbean tour, Sears’ absence comes at an unfortunate time for the visitors. Nevertheless, New Zealand will hope the depth provided by Lister, Duffy and the in-form Smith is enough to compensate as they look to begin the ODI series against the West Indies on a winning note.
