Romanian filmmaker Paul Cioran is in the final stages of post-production on his first feature, Another One, Maybe. But Not This One. Produced by Claudiu Mitcu through Parada Film, the project is a co-production with Wearebasca, represented by Ioachim Stroe and Alina Tarbă, and Avanpost, represented by Vlad Rădulescu.
Written and directed by Cioran, the film focuses on Ana (newcomer Camelia Aron), a young girl who discovers that one of her neighbours has been murdered. As she struggles to make sense of the violent event, she begins to see both the world around her and the relationship with her father, Septimiu (Laurenţiu Bănescu), in a different light. The cast also includes Vasile Muraru, Ofelia Popii, Andreea Vasile, Rodica Lazăr and Cristian Popa.
The budget amounts to €530,000, with circa €200,000 coming from the Romanian National Film Center. DoP Alex Sterian lensed the film over an 18-day shoot in November and December 2025, with filming taking place primarily in Bucharest, and nearby small towns and villages.
The director says the seed for the project dates back more than a decade. “The first notes for this story go back to around 2014. I don’t remember exactly when the idea first appeared, but I clearly remember its core: a father and his daughter find a murdered neighbour. That has always remained unchanged.” Over the years, however, the story evolved together with the filmmaker himself. “The biggest change was that, in the meantime, I became a father. Suddenly, everything in the story gained a much deeper personal meaning,” Cioran says.
Describing the film as a “family thriller”, the director stresses that genre was never an end in itself. “For me, Another One, Maybe. But Not This One is about the death of a certain way of being a father. […] The thriller elements, the danger, the atmosphere and the suspense all emerged from that central concern, rather than being imposed from outside. The neighbour’s violent death becomes the darkest mirror of the relationship between father and daughter, and also between father and grandfather,” the director explains.
Producer Claudiu Mitcu says finding the right actress to carry the movie was one of the project’s greatest challenges, as the protagonist is almost constantly on screen. After auditioning around 500 girls aged between 11 and 13, a long process that Cioran was in charge of, Camelia Aron was chosen for the role.
Another One, Maybe. But Not This One will be released domestically in the second half of 2027.
