England‘s white-ball reset continues to gather pace as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced a dynamic 16-player squad for the highly anticipated three-match One Day International (ODI) home series against India. With the first ball scheduled to be bowled on July 14 at Edgbaston, the selectors have signalled a clear vision for the future, blending high-potential youth with seasoned World Cup winners. Coming off a resilient 2-1 ODI series victory over Sri Lanka earlier this year, Harry Brook retains the captaincy as England prepares to host a formidable Indian side in what promises to be a thriller of a mid-summer cricket series.

James Coles receives his first ODI selection in England’s squad

The headline inclusion in the 16-man squad is undoubtedly the maiden ODI call-up for Sussex’s 21-year-old sensation, James Coles. The talented all-rounder has enjoyed a meteoric rise through the domestic circuit and England Lions pathways, turning heads with his tactical maturity, sharp left-arm spin, and explosive middle-order batting. Having already broken into England’s T20I setup for the ongoing matches against India, Coles’s promotion to the 50-over format highlights the selectors’ immense faith in his multi-dimensional skillset.

Joining Coles in the pursuit of a format debut is Nottinghamshire speedster Josh Tongue. While Tongue has already made a significant impact in the red-ball arena, most notably dismantling batting lineups during the late 2025 Ashes series, he is yet to earn his first cap in ODI cricket. His ability to extract steep bounce and raw pace offers an exciting dimension to England’s tactical plans against India’s world-class top order.

England unveil a refreshed ODI squad for the home series against India

The newly unveiled squad strikes a deliberate balance between radical regeneration and core stability. To complement the young energy of prospective debutants like Coles and Tongue, England has recalled express pacemen Gus Atkinson and Saqib Mahmood. Atkinson returns to the 50-over frame after focused stints in red-ball cricket, while Mahmood continues his successful international resurgence following a series of injury setbacks. Alongside a fully fit Jofra Archer, fresh off a blistering IPL 2026 season, and veteran all-rounder Sam Curran, England boast a remarkably deep and varied seam attack.

Captain Brook will have no shortage of experience to lean on, with stalwarts Joe Root, Jos Buttler, and premier spinner Adil Rashid anchoring the squad. However, the refreshed direction of the team is equally defined by its notable absentees. Established figures such as Zak Crawley, Brydon Carse, Jamie Overton, and Luke Wood have all missed out on selection, emphasizing the intense competition for places in this new era of English white-ball cricket.

The high-stakes series will progress rapidly across three iconic UK venues over the course of five days:

    • First ODI: July 14, Edgbaston, Birmingham
    • Second ODI: July 16, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff
    • Third ODI: July 19, Lord’s, London

With India bringing a heavyweight squad featuring the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and a returning Jasprit Bumrah, this upcoming series will serve as the ultimate litmus test for England’s evolving ODI identity.
