The third T20I between England and India at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on July 7, 2026, will go down as a night of tactical bewilderment and statistical horror for the Men in Blue. In a clinical display, England dismantled the visitors by 125 runs, clinching a dominant 2-0 lead in the five-match series. While the margin of defeat was historic, it was a bizarre tactical decision by India’s team management that ignited a massive debate in the cricketing world, drawing sharp criticism from former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik.

As India’s top order disintegrated under relentless English pace, the decision-making in the dugout raised eyebrows. Following Axar Patel‘s dismissal on the final delivery of the fifth over, India found themselves reeling at 52/5. Instead of sending in the established power-hitter Shivam Dube to stabilize the innings, head coach Gautam Gambhir and the team management opted to promote tailender Harshit Rana to number seven.

Karthik, who was on commentary duty during the broadcast, did not hold back his astonishment.

“Are you serious? Harshit Rana ahead of Shivam Dube? You can’t be serious,” Karthik exclaimed on air, voicing the confusion of thousands watching.

Karthik questioned whether the management lacked faith in Dube’s ability to handle the crisis. “Do they not trust Dube enough to send him in at this stage? Instead, they’ve promoted Harshit Rana ahead of him. I’m not sure that’s the right way to go about it,” he added. The gamble failed spectacularly. While Rana lingered for a sluggish 9 off 13 balls, Dube eventually walked out two overs later only to be dismissed for a mere 2 off 4 balls, falling to a fired-up Josh Tongue.

The tactical confusion only compounded India’s misery on a night where they recorded their heaviest-ever T20I defeat by runs. Electing to bat first, England overcame early jitters as opener Phil Salt anchoring the innings with a brutal 44-ball 70. Supported by quick cameos from Jos Buttler (36) and an unbeaten finishing act from Sam Curran (41* off 24), England posted a formidable 201/7 in their 20 overs. Prince Yadav was the pick of the Indian bowlers, returning figures of 2/30.

In reply, India’s run chase never got off the ground, imploding spectacularly in just 11.4 overs for a paltry 76 runs. The English pace duo of Tongue (4/28) and Player of the Match Jofra Archer (3/29) tore through the Indian lineup with blistering speed and precision. Wickets fell in regular clusters, preventing any semblance of a partnership. Only three Indian batters crossed double digits, with Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ishan Kishan top-scoring with just 13 runs each. With this comprehensive 125-run victory, England firmly holds the steering wheel of the series, leaving a searching Indian side with the Herculean task of winning the remaining two games to prevent a total series defeat.
