Reece James, Declan Rice and Marc Guehi all missed England team training on Wednesday ahead of Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway.

The trio instead followed individual training programmes in Kansas City, while the remaining 22 members of Thomas Tuchel’s squad trained as normal.

Jordan Henderson was also absent as he continues his recovery after undergoing surgery on the broken arm he suffered during celebrations following England’s last-16 win over Mexico.

England’s medical staff will now monitor the fitness of James, Rice and Guehi closely over the coming days as Tuchel prepares for one of his side’s biggest tests of the tournament.

    Right-back concerns continue for Tuchel

James’ continued absence will be a particular concern for England given their problems at right-back throughout the World Cup.

The Chelsea defender started England’s opening two matches before suffering soreness in his hamstring following the goalless draw with Ghana.

England were already short in the position after Tino Livramento withdrew from the squad on the eve of the tournament through injury.

Tuchel opted to call up Trevoh Chalobah as cover, with Jarell Quansah used as an emergency right-back option during the group stage.

However, Quansah was forced off injured against Panama before returning for the last-16 clash with Mexico, where he was sent off after 54 minutes and will now serve a suspension against Norway.

Djed Spence deputised against DR Congo, while Declan Rice was forced to fill in on the right side of defence during the closing stages of that victory.

Ezri Konsa also shifted across following Quansah’s dismissal against Mexico, but England will hope James can return in time to face Erling Haaland and Norway in Miami.

Rice and Guehi are also following what the Football Association described as individual programmes after both completed the full 120 minutes against Mexico.

Rice has managed several fitness issues during the tournament, having previously missed the group-stage win over Panama following a heavy blow to his calf.

Guehi, meanwhile, has started every match of England’s World Cup campaign and remains a key figure in the centre of Tuchel’s defence.
