Portugal have appointed Jorge Jesus as their new coach following the resignation of Roberto Martinez.
Martinez called time on his tenure after Portugal exited the World Cup in the last 16.
With a supremely talented group of players at their disposal, Portugal were considered among the contenders to win the World Cup for the first time.
But they underwhelmed in North America, finishing second in Group K behind Colombia and narrowly beating Croatia in the last 32 before suffering defeat to Iberian neighbours Spain.
Martinez subsequently confirmed the end of his time in the role in his post-match press conference.
And the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced on Friday that Jesus will be his replacement.
Jesus’ coaching career has taken him to 16 different clubs and spanned spells with Portuguese giants Benfica and Sporting CP as well as clubs in Turkey and Saudi Arabia. His most recent role was with Al-Nassr, during which he worked with Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo declared the 2026 World Cup would be his last, with Portugal’s record goalscorer’s continued presence in the starting XI attracting significant criticism as the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star struggled to justify his selection.
The 41-year-old scored three goals in the 2026 World Cup, with two coming against Uzbekistan and the other against Croatia coming from the penalty spot.
With Jesus taking over, it remains to be seen whether Ronaldo will play any further games for his country. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner will be 43 when the Euro 2028 finals take place in England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.
Jesus’ first game as Portugal boss will take place on September 24 when they begin their defence of the UEFA Nations League title against Wales.
