Netflix Will Work With The Production Company Behind The Traitors To Adapt Monopoly Into A New Show
The Monopoly game made its debut in 1935, originally being released by the Parker Brothers, later being absorbed by Hasbro in the 1990s. Initially taking inspiration from Atlantic City, New Jersey, the board game sees players developing homes and hotels, in addition to collecting rent, as they move around the board.
Licensed in multiple countries around the world, Monopoly has become a staple in pop culture. Thanks to this, there have been multiple attempts to adapt the game into a television format. Recently, Netflix has announced plans for a reality show based on the game.
The streaming platform has greenlit the new reality show from the production company, Studio Lambert, which is known for their work on The Traitors. It will produce the show in association with Hasbro, which has produced the board game since 1992.
According to Deadline Hollywood, the show will make its debut next year, with casting already underway. A synopsis read, “On a life-sized, fully realized Monopoly Town Square, 12 players will enter on equal footing.” However, things change once the game takes off.

The statement continued, “To survive, contestants must accumulate everything, or lose it all. Every negotiation, every decision, and every roll could mean the difference between building an empire and going directly to jail. One by one, bankrupt players are eliminated—until a single winner is left standing to take it all.”
The game is famous for its iconic play money, known as “Monopoly money.” However, the Netflix show will give players a chance at a real cash prize. Reportedly, the players will compete for a whopping $2 million prize.
There have been multiple attempts to adapt the game into television over the years. In 1990, ABC briefly aired a Monopoly game show. From 2015 to 2016, a syndicated game show adaptation, Monopoly Millionaires’ Club, was hosted by actor and comedian Billy Gardell. At the time, this show helped honor the game’s 80th anniversary.
