Craig Melvin was backstage moments before the start of the Today Show’s third hour. He co-hosts alongside Dylan Dreyer and Al Roker. Craig Melvin was allegedly approached by a man looking for his co-worker. Despite a heightened security team since Savannah Guthrie’s mother went missing, the intruder was able to sneak past security.
Al Roker was working on the show that day. However, he wasn’t near where the security breach happened. Instead, the man had words with Craig Melvin before security finally apprehended him.
Andrew Truelove, 41, was charged with two felony hate crimes after hurling racial slurs at Craig Melvin. He reportedly faces nearly a decade in prison if convicted. The Today Show hosts were granted a restraining order preventing him from coming anywhere near them.
Beloved Weatherman Breaks Silence On Terrifying Incident
Al Roker and Craig Melvin returned to television about 15 minutes after the incident happened. They didn’t address the situation on Thursday, but mentioned it on Friday’s episode. Craig Melvin briefly discussed the incident. He said that no one was injured and the show is cooperating with the NYPD in the matter.
Al Roker took to social media with a personal message addressing the intruder. However, he didn’t talk about himself. The beloved weatherman thanked fans for their concern for his friend and co-worker.
“A really heartfelt thank you to all who reached out over the last 24 hours to check in on my brother, @craigmelvinnbc. We are both okay. It’s moments like these that serve to pull us together. You all, like Craig, said “You come after one of us, you come after all of us,” he wrote.
