Jelly Roll has never shied away from his troubled past. He spent years in prison on drug and robbery charges. He has always credited his faith as part of his redemption story. The singer returned to prison to film the “Hands Up” video.
The video begins with a prayer voiceover as he arrives at the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center in San Francisco, California. Jelly Roll greets the inmates before taking the stage to perform his new song with some of the inmates as his band.
Jelly Roll took to social media to share more insight on what the video meant to him. “Truly one of the most special things I’ve ever had the opportunity to do. The moment my life truly changed is when I threw my hands up. I know a lot of folks will hear this and remember their ‘hands up’ moment as well and that is making this that much cooler for me,” he wrote.
It wasn’t the first time he performed for prison inmates. However, San Quentin is California’s oldest prison and houses the state’s most violent criminals. Johnny Cash performed at the prison several times, even recording a live album there.
