    The Opener: Arenado, Peralta, Ryan

The Red Sox might never lose again. Third baseman Caleb Durbin powered the club to its 14th straight victory with a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning against the Orioles yesterday. Boston can match the franchise record with a 15th consecutive win on Tuesday.

    1. Arenado notches hit No. 2,000

Diamondbacks third baseman Nolan Arenado pulled a Jeffrey Springs fastball down the left field line for a standup double in the fifth inning. The two-bagger marked the 2,000th hit of the veteran infielder’s career. Arenado became the sixth player in league history to reach 2,000 hits, 350 home runs, and 10 Gold Glove awards (h/t MLB on X). The rest of the list includes Ken Griffey Jr., Willie Mays, Mike Schmidt, Johnny Bench, and Al Kaline. Pretty good company.

    2. Peralta’s rough return to Milwaukee

Mets right-hander Freddy Peralta was back on a familiar mound Monday in Milwaukee. His return didn’t go so well. The Brewers tagged Peralta for seven earned runs over 5 1/3 innings. He gave up two home runs, including the first career blast for infielder Cooper Pratt. The outing raised Peralta’s ERA to 7.36 in July. The veteran is one of the key trade chips for a New York squad looking to sell at the deadline. He’ll be a free agent this offseason. Peralta will have two more chances to boost his trade value, starting with a matchup against the Dodgers this weekend.

    3. Ryan allows six HRs in Cleveland

Twins righty Joe Ryan entered his first start out of the All-Star break with a 2.85 ERA. That number jumped by more than half a run after a disastrous outing against the Guardians. Ryan was fortunate to only allow eight earned runs on a night he permitted six homers. The long ball has been a problem at times for Ryan, but he’d only allowed 10 home runs through 20 starts heading into Monday. Cleveland’s barrage included the first two career homers for outfielder Petey Halpin. The rookie has earned semi-regular work in center field with Angel Martinez sidelined.
