India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer believes the team’s recent string of defeats should be viewed as a valuable learning experience rather than a setback, insisting the challenging overseas tours have helped identify areas for improvement. Ahead of the opening T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare, Iyer expressed confidence that the lessons from losses against Ireland and England will strengthen the squad as they begin a fresh three-match series.

Shreyas Iyer sees valuable lessons in difficult phase

India have endured a tough start under Iyer’s leadership in the shortest format. Since taking over the captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav, the side has managed just one win in seven T20Is, suffering two defeats against Ireland before losing four matches in England. Despite the disappointing record, Iyer maintained that the recent tours have provided the team with much-needed clarity about its future direction. According to the skipper, the setbacks have highlighted the importance of game awareness, adaptability and making smarter decisions under pressure.

Speaking ahead of the first T20I in Harare, Iyer admitted that the England tour was challenging but stressed that the experience had been beneficial for the squad in the long run. He said the players now have a clearer understanding of what is required to develop into a stronger unit and compete consistently in overseas conditions. Iyer added that the difficult period has encouraged the team to reflect on its performances and identify the qualities needed to succeed at the highest level. Rather than dwelling on the defeats, the Indian captain believes the focus should now be on applying those lessons against Zimbabwe and building momentum for future assignments.

“We had a rough patch in England, but there were a lot of positives out of that. We got to know what we have to build as a team going forward, what kind of presence of mind, awareness and adaptability we need once we step onto the field,” Iyer said.

Indian players urged to adapt quickly in Zimbabwe

With several members of the touring squad playing in Zimbabwe for the first time, Iyer underlined the importance of adjusting to the local conditions as quickly as possible. The Harare Sports Club has traditionally offered different challenges compared to Indian pitches, and Iyer believes early adaptation could play a decisive role in the outcome of the series. He pointed out that understanding the surface, weather and match conditions from the very beginning would allow the players to execute their plans more effectively. The skipper acknowledged that unfamiliar conditions can test even experienced cricketers, making preparation and flexibility essential.

“Some of us are playing here for the first time, so the quicker we adapt, the better results we will get,” added Iyer.

Captain confident stronger team spirit will bring results

One of the biggest positives from India’s recent struggles, according to Iyer, has been the unity that has developed within the dressing room. He explained that although the results have been disappointing, the shared challenges have brought the players closer together. The squad has held several discussions about improving as a collective and establishing a clearer identity in T20 cricket.

Iyer also noted that playing three consecutive overseas series has given the team exposure that young players rarely receive in such a short period. He believes these experiences will prove invaluable as the group continues to grow. Calling the current phase a testing period rather than a crisis, Iyer expressed confidence that perseverance and continuous improvement would eventually translate into victories.

“The results didn’t go our way, but that has brought the team closer to each other. We’ve been having a lot of discussions about how we’re going to play as a unit going forward, especially against Zimbabwe right now. We’ve had three series outside India, and it’s a great exposure for us as a team because you don’t get this often. This is a challenging phase, and the quicker you overcome it, the better you become as a team and the results will eventually follow,” Iyer added further.

Notably, India now have an opportunity to turn those encouraging signs into results when they begin the Zimbabwe series, with Iyer hoping the lessons learned over the past few weeks will finally bear fruit.
