Love Is Blind star Chelsea Griffin isn’t letting her divorce from Kwame Appiah interfere with her plans of one day becoming a mom.

“My life took a change, and I’d been married for four years, and that chapter came to a close,” Chelsea, 35, told People on Wednesday, July 22. “I’m 35 years old, and I had to look in the mirror and make some important decisions about my life and my fertility because I’ve always wanted to be a mom.”

Chelsea, who announced her split from Kwame, 36, in May, noted that she decided to turn to Pacific Northwest Fertility to help her preserve her fertility in the wake of her split. After perusing her options, she decided to freeze her eggs for when she’s ready for children.

“Knowledge gives us confidence, and I feel like once I understood my options, I felt so much more at peace and empowered about doing something for me,” she revealed.

Once Chelsea began her fertility journey, she realized her decision wasn’t coming from a place of “fear” but, rather” a desire for “freedom.”

“And it’s about hope and resilience, and really that I can take control of the future and hopefully have the one that I want, and that’s to be a mom,” she added.

The reality star also explained that motherhood has “always been a dream” of hers and “something that’s always been in my heart and my brain and my future.”

When Chelsea’s relationship with Kwame fizzled out, her desire to become a mom didn’t waver.

“I [know] when the time is right for me, it will come,” she explained. “The ending of my marriage is so devastating, and this secures that for me and makes my chances of having that a lot higher, and allows me to not live with the fear, and frantically date people to find the father of my child.”

Chelsea is at peace with her choice, revealing that the dream of becoming a parent is no longer tied to finding The One in a certain timeframe.
“I can just have time, live with ease, know that my eggs are safe and secure, and ready for me if I need them,” she said.

Chelsea noted that she hopes her openness about egg freezing helps other women to see that they don’t have to be on someone else’s timeline.

“I mean, you’re growing up in your 30s, and everyone’s around you getting married and having babies, and if any one of those steps in the process is more difficult for you, it’s painful and it’s challenging, and it’s hard seeing everyone else go through these milestones that you wish you were at,” she shared. “When we share with other people parts of our journey or where we’re struggling in that continuum, I just think we can be better supported.”

Fans met Chelsea in 2023 on season 4 of Netflix’s Love Is Blind, which featured a group of Seattle-based contestants looking for love and willing to get engaged sight unseen in their pursuit of happily ever after. During the season finale, she and match Kwame tied the knot alongside two other couples.

Weeks after celebrating their fourth wedding anniversary, the pair announced they were getting divorced.

“It’s heartbreaking to share that our marriage is coming to an end,” Chelsea wrote in a May Instagram statement. “This is not the outcome I hoped for, and I entered this relationship with deep love, commitment and the intention of building a lasting life together.”

She added, “I poured my whole heart into this marriage and wanted it to work until the very end, but lasting marriages require more than love alone. I remain grateful for the life, memories and experiences that we shared.”

Kwame wrote a statement of his own, revealing at the time, “This isn’t something either of us ever imagined, and it’s been one of the hardest decisions to make.”

He noted, “As difficult as it’s been to arrive here, I believe it’s in our best interest considering amongst many other things, that our ultimate life goals don’t feel aligned.”
