The Sixers had initially named James Hopes as head coach of their men’s side, but his decision to return to Queensland and join the Brisbane Heat left the role vacant. That led the franchise to promote Matthew Mott from the women’s team to the men’s setup, creating an opening that has now been filled by Clarke, who previously worked as Mott’s assistant.

Clarke’s coaching journey has been anything but conventional. His transition into coaching saw him take charge at the University of Queensland before joining Cricket New South Wales in 2025 as women’s coach. Clarke quickly made an impression, leading the side to the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) final and earning recognition for his player-management skills and tactical approach.
His previous experience working alongside Matthew Mott with the Sixers also means he understands the team’s culture, expectations and playing group. That familiarity is expected to help ensure a smooth transition as the franchise prepares for another title challenge. Sixers target WBBL title after near miss last season
Clarke inherits a side that enjoyed an impressive campaign in the previous edition of the WBBL. The Sixers finished second on the points table after collecting 13 points from 10 matches, emerging as one of the competition’s most consistent teams during the league stage.
