Former India opener Aakash Chopra has heaped praise on teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi after his stunning return to form in the opening T20I against Zimbabwe. The youngster endured a difficult start to his international career during India’s tour of England, where he struggled for runs and was eventually dropped from the playing XI. However, the left-hander responded in emphatic fashion in Harare, producing a fearless innings that reminded everyone why he is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in world cricket.

India also returned to winning ways after a disappointing run in the shortest format. Under new captain Shreyas Iyer, the Men in Blue had suffered defeats against Ireland and England following their T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year. Chasing 126 against Zimbabwe, India sealed a comfortable seven-wicket win, with Suryavanshi’s explosive knock laying the foundation for the successful chase.

Aakash Chopra lauds Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s fearless approach

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra admitted there was plenty of curiosity surrounding Suryavanshi after his difficult tour of England. The former India batter said the biggest challenge for the 15-year-old was dealing with the pressure of returning to the side after being left out, but he was delighted to see the youngster stick to his natural attacking game instead of changing his approach.

Chopra pointed out that Suryavanshi never looked burdened by recent failures and continued to play with complete freedom. According to him, the young opener deserves credit for backing his strengths rather than allowing disappointment to affect his confidence.

“There was a wait to see how this boy would play, when he would play, and how many runs he would score. To be very honest, it’s only a matter of when, not if, as he would definitely score runs. However, he would have felt a little pressure because he was a part of the team and then dropped. Now he has played again, and you realize that you need to score runs. Since he is 15 years old and probably knows only one way of playing, didn’t change his way of playing, which is a good thing,” Chopra said.

Suryavanshi announces his return with record-breaking fifty

The Rajasthan Royals (RR) youngster wasted little time making an impact against Zimbabwe. Opening the innings in a chase of 126, Suryavanshi blasted 50 off just 19 deliveries, smashing four fours and four sixes at a strike rate above 263. His breathtaking innings effectively ended the contest inside the powerplay as India cruised home with 40 balls to spare.

The innings was even more special considering his recent struggles. During India’s T20I series against England, Suryavanshi managed only 42 runs across three matches after making his international debut in Manchester. However, Harare proved to be familiar territory for the teenage prodigy, having previously dominated at the venue during the 2025 Under-19 World Cup, where he amassed 439 runs, including a memorable 175 in the final against England.

Suryavanshi’s fearless knock not only guided India to a convincing victory but also reaffirmed the immense potential that has made him one of the most exciting young cricketers in the game. His ability to quickly move on from setbacks has already drawn praise from former players, and if his latest performance is any indication, the youngster looks set to play a major role in India’s T20 plans going forward.
