Following the sad news that Chuck Russell, the director behind A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob, The Mask, and Eraser, passed away in his San Diego home on the 22nd July, tributes have poured in online and in statements to honour the filmmaker. Russell was 74 years old and leaves behind his wife and three children.
The director got his start in filmmaking when he worked as a production manager and assistant director on indie projects, such as Hell Night. Russell then penned the script for the 1984 film Dreamscape by director Joseph Rueben, later going on to direct his feature film A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, a sequel to the original Nightmare on Elm Street from 1984, in 1987.
Russell then took on a remake of 1958’s The Blob in 1988, but it wasn’t until 1994 that the filmmaker would see critical acclaim with The Mask, starring comedian legend Jim Carrey as a bank clerk who stumbles across an ancient mask which changes his life. The film grossed $351.8 million from a budget of $18-$23 million and saw Carrey earn a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and the film earn an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects.
Carrey was among the first to respond to the news of Russell’s passing.
“I consider it a privilege to have worked with Chuck Russell, who, during the shooting of The Mask, created an ebullient, childlike atmosphere of wonder and camaraderie on his set,” the star shared in a tribute statement. “The entire cast and crew were touched and inspired by his playfulness. Every one of us has been many years blessed by that buoyant and timeless moment. I consider The Mask one of the jewels of my creative life. Thank you, Chuck.”
Horror site and podcast Bloody Disgusting cited the filmmaker’s career in genre filmmaking as “a horror legacy that will never be forgotten.” John Squires, who runs the site, added, “Hard to say what would have become of Freddy [Kruger] without Chuck Russell’s Dream Warriors. Game changer for the franchise. What a loss.”
Additionally, fans took to the platform X to share their love and appreciation for Russell, with one user posting, “Seeing The Mask at the cinema as a kid is a core memory of mine. Dream Warriors was one of my favourite slasher films as a kid, and The Blob is one of the greatest horror remakes of all time.”
The Soska Sisters, the creators of American Mary, shared “Sleep in peace“, while comic writer Valerie D’Orazio listed the filmmaker’s greatest film credits and added “What a run. RIP.”
