History was rewritten in Trinidad during the opening Test match between the West Indies and Pakistan. What began as a steady, controlled batting performance by the visitors quickly mutated into an extraordinary display of bowling dominance. At the heart of this dramatic collapse was 32-year-old Barbadian all-rounder Justin Greaves, whose relentless seam movement and pinpoint accuracy blew through Pakistan’s middle and lower order on Day 3 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. In doing so, Greaves secured his maiden five-wicket haul in international Test cricket and etched his name into the sport’s record books with an achievement never seen before in detailed statistical archives.

Justin Greaves achieves unprecedented Test feat with five consecutive wicket-maidens against Pakistan

Before Greaves took the ball, Pakistan was cruising in their first innings at a comfortable 244/3. Captain Shan Masood was holding the innings together with a fine century, and a sizeable lead appeared inevitable for the visiting side. However, the entire course of the match shifted within a breathtaking hour.

Greaves delivered an unplayable 11-over spell, capturing 5 wickets for just 27 runs. Remarkably, every single one of his five wickets came in five consecutive maiden overs, meaning he picked up five wickets without yielding a single run across 30 consecutive deliveries.

This landmark performance broke the previous record held by former England legendary fast bowler Stuart Broad. Broad famously claimed four consecutive wicket-maidens during a blistering spell against South Africa at Johannesburg in January 2016. Greaves went one step further, starting his sequence by dismissing the centurion Masood before cleaning up key batters including Aamer Jamal, Ali Usman, and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan.

He returned right after the lunch interval to remove Mohammad Abbas caught behind, sealing his fifth straight wicket-maiden and wrapping up Pakistan’s innings for 282. The dramatic collapse gifted the West Indies a slender 29-run lead in their first innings, blowing the World Test Championship match wide open.

Greaves’ reacts to his five-wicket haul against Pakistan

Reflecting on his historic feat after the day’s play, Greaves highlighted the role of team captain Roston Chase in setting a calm tone before he took the ball. Rather than placing pressure on him, Chase instructed him to focus strictly on maintaining consistent lines and lengths.

“When I came on, captain Roston Chase just said ‘continue to be disciplined in what you are doing’ and to see if I can get some wickets for the team. The ball nipped around, and I got some reward. Anytime I get the ball in hand, the team looks to me to be that solid player for them to try to dig us out of situations,” Greaves explained.

Though delighted with his maiden five-wicket haul, Greaves emphasized that the match remains far from over. Pakistan retaliated quickly with the ball during the final session of Day 3, leaving the West Indies struggling at 126/7 in their second innings. With an overall lead of 155 runs, the home team will need their lower order to push for a defendable target, ensuring Greaves’ historic spell becomes a match-winning one.
