The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has once again rewarded domestic excellence by handing Madhya Pradesh all-rounder Saransh Jain his maiden senior India call-up for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. The 33-year-old has been drafted into the squad as a replacement for Washington Sundar, who is unavailable due to a hamstring injury.

India’s selectors were looking for a specialist right-arm off-spinner to complement an attack that already includes left-arm spin options in Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Manav Suthar. Saransh emerged as the ideal candidate after years of consistent performances in domestic cricket, followed by an impressive India A tour of Sri Lanka earlier this month. His selection marks the culmination of a decade-long journey built on patience, perseverance and remarkable red-ball consistency.

    Who is Saransh Jain?

Saransh is a left-handed batter and right-arm off-spin bowling all-rounder from Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Born on March 31, 1993, he has represented Madhya Pradesh, Central Zone, Rest of India and India A during his domestic career. Known for bowling long, disciplined spells while contributing valuable runs in the lower order, Saransh has developed into one of India’s most dependable spin-bowling all-rounders in First-Class cricket.

His impressive domestic record reflects that consistency. Across 54 First-Class matches, he has scored 2,223 runs at an average of 31.75, including two centuries and 14 half-centuries. With the ball, he has claimed 188 wickets at an average of 27.30, registering 10 five-wicket hauls.

A late bloomer who never stopped improving

Unlike many modern India internationals, Saransh’s rise did not happen overnight. He made his First-Class debut for Madhya Pradesh in 2014 but remained largely under the radar during the early years of his career. His breakthrough came during the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy season under the guidance of veteran coach Chandrakant Pandit.

Saransh played a key role in helping Madhya Pradesh lift their maiden Ranji Trophy title, producing valuable performances with both bat and ball throughout the knockout stages. In the final against Mumbai, he contributed an important half-century and picked up crucial wickets to help his side secure a memorable victory. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most consistent performers in India’s domestic circuit.

Numbers that made him impossible to ignore

Saransh has enjoyed outstanding success over the past few domestic seasons. In the latest Ranji Trophy campaign, he finished as Madhya Pradesh’s highest run-scorer with 518 runs in seven matches at an average of 57.55 while also claiming 30 wickets at 20.43. He followed that up with a stellar Duleep Trophy campaign for Central Zone, where he picked up 16 wickets in just two matches and scored two half-centuries to finish as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker.

His performances continued during the recent India A tour of Sri Lanka. Playing in familiar spin-friendly conditions, Saransh strengthened his case for national selection by taking six wickets across two unofficial Tests and scoring a crucial unbeaten 70 in the second match.

    Cricket runs in the family

Saransh’s cricketing roots trace back to his father, Subodh Jain, who represented Madhya Pradesh as a right-arm off-spinner in the Ranji Trophy. Although Subodh never played for India, he laid the foundation for his son’s cricketing journey.

Another major influence on Saransh has been former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, whom he has often described as his biggest inspiration. He has previously spoken about studying Ashwin’s bowling closely and trying to emulate his dedication and approach to the game.

A chance to make history in Sri Lanka

Saransh’s inclusion comes at an important stage for India’s Test side. With several left-handed batters expected in Sri Lanka’s lineup, the selectors preferred a specialist right-arm off-spinner instead of another left-arm finger spinner. He is now competing with Suthar for the third spinner’s role alongside Jadeja and Kuldeep. If Saransh earns his Test debut, he will become the first Indian cricketer to make his international debut after the age of 33 since Robin Singh in 1998.

Interestingly, despite his outstanding domestic performances, Saransh has never been picked by an IPL franchise. He entered multiple IPL auctions but remained unsold each time. However, his consistent red-ball performances have finally earned him the biggest opportunity of his career as he prepares to represent India at the highest level.
