Craig Melvin recently took a break from his usual role on Today. However, he was still unexpectedly missing the following week, in spite of it of a previous announcement sharing when he would return. As one of his co-hosts discussed what was going on, a few of his other co-stars went missing.
Craig Melvin Has Held Multiple Positions On Today Over The Years
Melvin first joined Today in 2018 as a news anchor, previously filling in on the program’s weekend editions in 2011. Following this, he became a co-host on the show’s third hour. Early last year, he was promoted to primary co-anchor for the first and second hours alongside Savannah Guthrie following the departure of Hoda Kotb.
Melvin was absent during the entirety of last week. However, his hiatus continued well into the following week, with him being missing on July 27 and 28.
During this past Tuesday episode, Sheinelle Jones confirmed, “Welcome back to Today. So glad you’re with us on this Tuesday morning. Hallie [Jackson] and I are covering for Savannah [Guthrie], who remains on assignment for NBC, and Craig will be back here tomorrow.” However, Melvin was still absent the following Wednesday episode.
During this episode, Jones shared, “Welcome back to Today. We certainly appreciate you being with us on this Wednesday morning. Hallie Jackson is helping us out. Savannah’s on assignment for NBC. Craig’s missing this crowd.” This was in reference to the crowd outside who was waiting for a performance from Mumford & Sons at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
Melvin Had Shared That His Vacation Was Coming To An End On Social Media
Previously, Melvin was confirmed to be on summer break with his family. The news anchor even shared a photo from his time at the beach on social media. With Melvin’s absence seemingly unplanned by the show, many fans were wondering if he simply extended his vacation.
However, in another recent post, Melvin noted that his vacation was over. Taking to Instagram, he shared, “Last full day of paradise and the scruff just got approved by my most important critic… Soaking in every moment before we have to leave this place.”
For the time being, many of Melvin’s Today co-stars have been taking breaks from the show. Dylan Dreyer is also spending time off with family. In addition, a few are involved with other projects.
Carson Daly is currently filming for new episodes of The Voice, and Guthrie is working on the upcoming game show, Wordle. In fact, taking to social media, Guthrie recently shared a post where she visited Daly on the set of the show. As noted by TV Insider, Al Roker also shared plans to take an upcoming break from the show.
