Pakistan have suffered a significant setback ahead of the second and final Test against the West Indies, with experienced top-order batter Shan Masood ruled out after sustaining a fracture to the index finger of his left hand during the opening Test. The injury comes at a crucial stage of the series, leaving Pakistan without one of their senior batters as they attempt to bounce back from a disappointing defeat and avoid a series loss in the Caribbean.

Finger injury forces Shan Masood out of decisive Test

Masood picked up the injury on the third day of the first Test at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy when he was struck on the left hand by a sharp delivery from West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales. The blow forced immediate concern, and subsequent medical examinations confirmed a fracture. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that the left-handed batter underwent scans and a detailed clinical assessment after the incident. He is currently being treated under the supervision of the team’s medical staff.

Although Masood has been ruled out of the second Test, the PCB confirmed that he will remain with the touring squad while continuing his rehabilitation. His recovery will be closely monitored over the coming weeks, with his participation in Pakistan’s opening Test against England, scheduled to begin on August 19 at Headingley in Leeds, depending on how well he responds to treatment.

Masood’s absence leaves Pakistan without an experienced presence at the top of the order at a time when stability will be vital. Having featured regularly in the Test setup, his ability to anchor the innings and guide younger batters will certainly be missed in the series decider.

Pakistan searching for answers after disappointing first Test

The injury compounds Pakistan’s troubles after a frustrating performance in the opening Test. Chasing a modest target of 211 for victory, the visitors endured a dramatic batting collapse and were bowled out for just 120, handing the West Indies a convincing 90-run win.

Pakistan struggled to build meaningful partnerships throughout the chase, with wickets falling at regular intervals. Captain Babar Azam stood tall amid the collapse, remaining unbeaten on 58 from 107 deliveries, an innings decorated with nine boundaries. Mohammad Abbas provided some resistance lower down the order with 23 runs, but the rest of the batting unit failed to cope with the disciplined West Indies attack.

Seales emerged as the star of the contest, delivering a devastating spell of fast bowling. The right-arm pacer ripped through Pakistan’s batting lineup, finishing with outstanding figures of 5/20 to play the decisive role in securing victory for the hosts.

Series on the line in Trinidad

Pakistan now head into the second Test with the pressure firmly on their shoulders. Trailing 1-0 in the two-match series, they must win the final contest to avoid returning home with a series defeat. The absence of Masood only adds to the challenge, forcing the team management to rethink their batting combination ahead of the clash at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad, which is scheduled to be played from August 2 to August 6.

With the series hanging in the balance, Pakistan will need a far stronger all-round performance if they are to overcome both the West Indies and the setback caused by Masood’s untimely injury.
