The Giants selected the contract of infielder Nate Furman, per a team announcement. Jesus Rodriguez is heading to the injured list with an elbow injury. San Francisco has an opening on the 40-man roster, so an additional move was not required.
Furman came to the organization as the player to be named later in a deal that sent right-hander Alex Cobb to the Guardians in 2024. After missing the first half of 2025 with a shoulder injury, Furman closed the season strong. He zoomed up the ladder, hitting .369 with an 1.100 OPS in 36 games across four levels.
The 25-year-old Furman has put together a solid year in his first taste of Triple-A. He was slashing .284/.370/.405 in 95 games with Sacramento before his promotion. The infielder has matched a career high with seven home runs and chipped in 18 stolen bases.
Cleveland took Furman in the fourth round of the 2022 draft. He didn’t show much power during his time in the organization, but did flash more speed than he’s offered recently. Furman stole 37 bases in his first pro season, which consisted of 108 games split between Single-A and High-A. He’s stolen 31 bases in the three years since that debut campaign.
Furman has shown a strong ability to take walks and get on base. He’s had a walk rate above 11% and an OBP of at least .370 in all four minor league seasons. He had nearly as many walks (48) as strikeouts (54) in 434 plate appearances at Triple-A.
Rodriguez landed on the 10-day IL with right elbow neuritis. He’d played sparingly for the club since being recalled in early July. The 24-year-old has delivered a .728 OPS across 22 games in his first year as a big leaguer. Rodriguez has primarily played catcher with the Giants, but he’s also picked up reps at second base and both corner outfield spots. San Francisco has Daniel Susac and Drew Cavanaugh handling the catching duties, so the club opted to add an infielder to the roster.
