Laurence Biron of Varennes, Quebec won the gold medal for Canada on Saturday at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Biron placed first in the women’s 63 kilogram division. She became the third Canadian judokan to win Commonwealth gold following Evelyn Beaton of Lethbridge, Alberta and Julien Frascadore of Quebec City, Quebec.
Biron defeated Saya Middleton of Australia in the final. Enku Ekuta of Nigeria and Unnati Sharma of India won the bronze medals. Biron defeated Sophie Wood of Scotland in the round of 16, Skye Knoester of South Africa in the quarterfinals and Rita Kabinda of Zambia in the semifinals.
Team Canada won five more silver medals on Saturday. Scarlett Delgado of Brampton, Ontario was second in the women’s 54 kilogram boxing competition, Marie Al-Ahmadieh of Montreal, Quebec was second in the women’s 50 kilogram boxing competition, Guillaume Gaulin of Val-d’Or, Quebec was second in the women’s 80 kilogram judo competition, and Canada placed second in the men’s 4×100 metre relay and women’s 4×100 metre relay.
Canada has now won 59 medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games (18 gold medals, 20 silver medals and 21 bronze medals). They are in third place in the overall medal standings. Australia leads with 158 medals and England is in second place with 102 medals.
