In medical innovation, we prioritize evidence, outcomes, and economics. Metrics such as clinical endpoints, regulatory milestones, reimbursement pathways, and market opportunities define our progress.
However, another force quietly shapes the future of medicine and receives far less attention in boardrooms and investor meetings: hope.
This was evident at this year’s American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting. The conference’s energy was not driven by a single breakthrough, but by the steady accumulation of scientific progress.
Throughout the presentations and discussions, a recurring theme was clear: advances in cancer care increasingly result from incremental discoveries that lead to meaningful improvements for patients. New targeted therapies, deeper biological insights, and more sophisticated treatments are expanding possibilities in oncology.
Notably, many advances no longer seem extraordinary because they are now expected. What was once remarkable progress is now routine in cancer research. This expectation reflects hope. Researchers pursue difficult problems because they believe better answers are possible, and patients benefit from the momentum these efforts create.
Too often, hope is seen as an emotional concept rather than a strategic one, associated more with patients and families than with drug developers or industry leaders. Yet, hope is a powerful driver of medical innovation. It motivates researchers to pursue challenging questions, investors to fund ambitious programs, and entrepreneurs to address diseases that have resisted decades of advances.
Perhaps nowhere is this more evident than in ovarian cancer.
For patients diagnosed with ovarian cancer, treatment often follows a familiar pattern. Initial therapies may be effective, and patients frequently respond well to surgery and platinum-based chemotherapy. However, for far too many, the disease returns.
Recurrence is more than a clinical event; it is an emotional turning point. Patients and families may face the reality that previous treatments are becoming less effective. With each recurrence, options often become more limited. Despite advances in targeted and maintenance therapies, many patients eventually encounter fewer paths forward. Here, hope becomes especially important.
Importantly, responsible medical innovation should not manufacture hope or create unrealistic expectations. Patients deserve transparency about disease realities, the risks of experimental therapies, and the uncertainty of drug development. Scientific setbacks are common, and clinical development is challenging.
Acknowledging these realities does not diminish the importance of hope; it reinforces it. Hope provides a reason to continue seeking solutions when current approaches fall short.
History offers many examples. Many standard cancer therapies were once considered unlikely or impossible. Immunotherapy, now transformative for several cancers, was pursued for decades before achieving success. Targeted therapies that are foundational to cancer care began as hypotheses that challenged conventional thinking.
Innovation rarely occurs by following familiar paths. This is especially true in cancers where progress is slow and unmet needs remain significant. Ovarian cancer presents major scientific challenges. The disease often develops resistance to treatment, tumors can suppress immune responses, and many therapies struggle to reach and act within the tumor microenvironment.
These obstacles highlight the need to continue exploring new ideas. The future of cancer treatment will likely depend on approaches that move beyond conventional strategies and address diseases in fundamentally new ways. This may include novel cell therapies, next-generation immune treatments, advanced delivery platforms, or emerging technologies.
Not every approach will succeed. However, if the medical industry avoids ambitious science due to difficult odds, progress will slow. Hope is essential in preventing stagnation.
For innovators, hope inspires the willingness to address problems others consider too complex. For investors, it supports long-term commitments to scientific development despite uncertainty. For clinicians, it sustains the pursuit of better options for patients who need them most.
Most importantly, for patients, hope preserves the belief that tomorrow’s treatments can be better than today’s. A belief we should all strive to sustain.
That belief has an impact beyond emotion. It can influence clinical trial participation, encourage engagement with care, and help patients navigate difficult decisions and uncertain futures. While hope is not a treatment, it often serves as the foundation for advances in treatment.
As healthcare and life science leaders consider the future of cancer care, we should recognize hope for what it is. It is not wishful thinking, a substitute for evidence, or a marketing strategy.
Instead, hope is a catalyst for scientific ambition. It encourages researchers, clinicians, investors, and innovators to pursue solutions where none currently exist. In oncology, many major breakthroughs begin with the belief that a better answer is possible.
Without hope, innovation has no reason to begin. With it, the future remains open.
