Anthony Taylor says the relentless pressure of elite refereeing, combined with the impact it had on his family, convinced him the time was right to bring the curtain down on his career in English football.

The 47-year-old ended a 20-year spell as one of the Premier League’s leading officials after officiating Spain’s 1-0 World Cup last-16 win over Portugal on July 6.

Taylor has since accepted a new role as director of elite refereeing with the Turkish Football Federation, bringing to an end a career that included 668 domestic matches, every major English cup final and 163 international fixtures.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Taylor admitted the scrutiny that comes with refereeing at the highest level can take a significant mental toll.

“No referee is being honest if they say criticism and pressure don’t affect them,” he said.

“You’re constantly dealing with the fear of making mistakes, opinions from supporters, managers, the media, colleagues and so many other outside influences.

“All of that can create self-doubt and chip away at your confidence if you’re not careful.”

    Taylor: Demands wear you down

Although Taylor insists he always felt capable of handling those demands, he recognised the physical and mental strain had reached a natural conclusion.

“There are periods where your energy drops,” he explained. “That affects motivation and confidence, and you have to keep picking yourself up to go again.

“I always trusted my own coping mechanisms, but I felt my body and mind were telling me it was the right time for a new challenge.

“I’m fortunate that people value my experience enough to give me the opportunity to help referees in a different role.”

Family considerations also weighed heavily on his decision.

Taylor’s relatives stopped attending his matches after the abuse he received from Roma supporters following the 2023 Europa League final, when he and his family were confronted at Budapest Airport.

He admitted moments like that inevitably influenced his thinking.

“My family and friends have sacrificed a huge amount over the years,” he said. “That’s something you never lose sight of.

“It wasn’t just the scrutiny itself, it was everything that came with doing the job at the highest level.

“I wanted to finish on my own terms, and ending my refereeing career after a World Cup felt like the perfect point to do it.”
