The summer window is about to close, giving teams a matter of weeks to complete their final deals with other clubs until 2027.

Last season, the 20 Premier League clubs reportedly spent more than £3 billion during the summer window – and there is certain to be ample spending again this time around.

Late deals in 2025 included Alexander Isak’s British-record £125 million move from Newcastle to Liverpool and Yoane Wissa’s £50m switch from Brentford to the Magpies.

Gianluigi Donnarumma also joined Manchester City from Paris Saint-Germain on the final day of the last summer window, when Senne Lammens moved to Manchester United from Antwerp.

When does the summer transfer window 2026 close?

The window opened on Monday June 15 and will shut on Tuesday September 1.

After that, every Premier League club can register a squad of up to 25 players, 17 of whom are allowed to be non-Home Grown Players.

A Home Grown Player has been registered with any club affiliated to the English or Welsh Football Association for three entire seasons or 36 months across their career before his 21st birthday, or the end of the season during which they turn 21.

Under-21 players do not count towards the 25-man limit.

What time does the Premier League transfer window shut on transfer deadline day?

The deadline is 23:00 BST in the Premier League, but clubs can have an extra two hours to file the remaining documentation if they submit a deal sheet confirming that an agreement has been reached.

The deal sheet must arrive fully completed before the transfer window closes.

For international transfers, clubs also have to comply with the FIFA Transfer Matching System deadline of midnight.

When does the summer transfer window close around Europe?

There are slight variations between the major European leagues. Here’s when they shut.

League Date BST close ET PT
    Premier League Sept 1 23:00 18:00 15:00
    LaLiga Sept 1 22:59 17:59 14:59
    Serie A Sept 1 19:00 14:00 11:00
    Bundesliga Aug 31 19:00 14:00 11:00
    Ligue 1 Aug 31 19:00 14:00 11:00

When does the 2026/27 winter transfer window open?

The Premier League winter transfer window opens on Friday January 1, 2027 and closes on Monday February 1, 2027 at 23:00 BST.

Can Premier League clubs sign players outside of the window?

Clubs can only add players outside of transfer windows who are free agents and if they have room in their 25-man squad.

Premier League teams can still announce deals with other clubs, but those players will not be registered to play until the window re-opens.

This means there is usually little to no movement when the window closes, with four months to wait until the window re-opens.

Players can be released by Premier League clubs at any time, but the usual rule is that they cannot sign for another side outside of the market.

    Summer transfer window latest news

Among Premier League clubs, there were two lavish moves in July when Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest £116 million for Elliot Anderson and Chelsea spent £117m to sign fellow England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.

Tottenham spent £85m to sign Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and broke their club record to sign Italy playmaker Sandro Tonali for £100m from Newcastle, who also sold Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal for £75m and brought in Ivory Coast winger Bazoumana Toure for £42m from Hoffenheim.

New Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola recruited defender Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for £60m and Brighton & Hove Albion and Spurs traded defenders, with Jan Paul van Hecke joining Roberto De Zerbi’s squad for £52m and Luka Vuskovic heading in the opposite direction for £50m.

Aston Villa spent £59.5m on one of the stars of the World Cup, adding Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, £59.5m, and Chelsea’s business did not stop with Rogers’ arrival, signing defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £51m and selling full-back Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for £51.8m and midfielder Andrey Santos to Manchester United for £50m.

Manchester City sold England goalkeeper James Trafford to Leeds United for £40m, but new Cityzens head coach Enzo Maresca has hinted that an expected move for Chelsea and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez will not materialise.

Arsenal’s interest in Vinicius Junior ended when the Brazil forward signed a new deal with Real Madrid, who signed Ivory Coast international Yan Diomande from Leipzig for a fee of up to £120m.

Barcelona opted not to sign Marcus Rashford despite the England forward’s successful season-long loan at the club from Manchester United, instead signing Newcastle and Three Lions wideman Anthony Gordon for £69.3m.

Barca are hoping to sign City midfielder Rodri, with the World Cup winner with Spain in the final year of his contract.
