India continued to build a strong first-innings total on Day 2 of the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium. Despite rain washing out the opening session, the visitors made the most of the limited time available and moved to 460/9 by stumps.

Devdutt Padikkal led the way with a magnificent 167, while KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel also made important contributions. However, Jurel’s dismissal became one of the standout moments of the rain-shortened day after Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva produced a stunning catch at first slip.

The dismissal came in the 110th over of India’s innings, with Prabath Jayasuriya operating against Jurel. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter looked to defend a delivery from the left-arm spinner, but the sharp turn completely deceived him. The ball took a leading edge off Jurel’s bat and flew towards first slip. De Silva reacted quickly, throwing himself towards the ball and completing a brilliant one-handed catch.

Jurel was left stunned by the dismissal and walked back to the pavilion after scoring a valuable 51 off 68 deliveries. The catch also gave Jayasuriya another wicket as Sri Lanka continued to make inroads into India’s lower order.

Dhruv Jurel makes useful contribution before stunning dismissal

Jurel’s half-century came at an important stage of India’s innings. With the visitors looking to push towards a sizeable first-innings total after losing several wickets, the wicketkeeper-batter provided some much-needed stability. He stitched together a 55-run partnership with Manav Suthar, helping India recover from 377/6.

Jurel brought up his half-century with a single and showed glimpses of attacking intent, including a couple of impressive pulls against Lahiru Kumara. His innings eventually ended shortly after reaching the milestone, but his contribution helped India move closer to a formidable total on a surface that was increasingly assisting the Sri Lankan spinners.

Devdutt Padikkal stars as India reach 460/9

Earlier, Padikkal continued his outstanding innings from the opening day and converted his overnight score of 131 into a career-best 167. The left-hander combined patience with controlled aggression and anchored India’s batting effort throughout the rain-affected day. Rahul also made a valuable 82 before being dismissed by Keshara Nuwantha, while the Sri Lankan bowlers found increasing assistance from the surface as the second new ball became available.

India eventually reached 460/9 after only 43 overs were possible on Day 2. Kuldeep Yadav and Prasidh Krishna remained unbeaten at the crease when play ended, with India well placed to put further pressure on Sri Lanka when the match resumes.
